Can anybody tell me what this lens is like with extension tubes fitted. I have found this lens not very good at close up work and was wondering if the performance of this lens improves with tubes on

I agree. And extension tubes won't make it one. For what it's worth, I LOVE the Canon 100mm macro lens. And, for the quality it provides, it's a bargain.
