Hello,

anyone could recommend a well padded shoulder bag/case that would fit 40D with EF-S 17-55 f2.8 mounted?

I had my eye on Lowepro Topload Zoom 1 but not sure if the camera with mounted lens would fit; I used to own ef-s 17-85 and it seemed that it would've been perfect fit, but I upgraded to 17-55 which is quite bulkier... I really want the bag to be able to hold just the camera and this single lens, nothing else needs to fit there (except maybe a CG-580 charger). I want compact bag, to easy carry around and for air travel. I have Canon 2400 series bag which is great but too bulky, and want more compact case.

thanks!
Dave

hi dave! try crumpler's 3, 4 or 5 Million Dollar Homes. the 3 is like a toploader, the 4 will fit your combo + a small lens like the nifty, while the 5 will fit the same + maybe a 430ex.

goodluck!:D

I like the TAMRAC Holster Bags for a single body & lens combo. Here is a link to their website. The 40D w/grip and mounted lens will fit in their Pro 7 or Pro 9 models.

I have a Lowepro holster bag, and it's very small and fits exactly one camera body with medium lens. But I love my Domke 5XB more.

thanks for suggestions to everyone - now I just need to figure out the precise dimensions; the problem is that 17-55mm f/2.8 is quite large lens, it needs like 5 inches, plus another 3 inches for the camera.. so I guess 8" minimum length, 6" width at least, and depth 5" ...

I checked out those crumplers, not sure if the smaller ones would fit, possibly so but tight I guess. But yes, definitely a holster bag

The Crumpler 4MDH and 5MDH would be perfect. Check my reviews to see what ya can fit. The Budgie Smuggler is the same size as the 4MDH and of course the 5MDH is the 5MDH. You can fit quite a bit in the 5MDH but the 4MDH would be camera, lens, and flash or small prime.

The Tamrac Adventure Messenger 3 (external link) is the one I use. It's good enough. I repositioned the padding on the inside to make room for the 17-55 mounted with the lens hood reverse attached. It's a little snug, but I think it's fine. I have tried it with only one side of the padding and it's fine too, except for piece of mind. If I had to do it over... I'd get the Adventure Messenger 4

Suggestion: Get a couple of Sterlingtek battery backups for about $12 each. Unless you're travelling overnight, you don't really need to carry the battery charger with you.

Yes, I saw that I'd really need one of the larger crumplers..

Reign, the Messenger sounds good, because I see that you have the same camera+ lens combo - so I know for 100% that it fits. I don't need extra batteries (I never use up the battery over a course of the day, maybe a few days at least, and so I can recharge), but need to fit the charger. I didn't buy the hood but I think I will; I have it for other lenses.

What do you consider large? The 3mDH and smaller weren't really intended for DLSR use. The 3MDH can really only handle a Rebel series and kit lens, more based for film. Larger is 6MDH and 7MDH which would be really large for that little bit.

well, I wanted a holster like Lowepro zoom 1, but large .Similarly well-padded. I own a smaller Lowepro zoom for on of my film cameras, the bag is perfect. However, even zoom 1 wouldn't probably fit my 40D with 17-55..so I need a size bigger. Yes I figured that crumpler 3 and even 4 is more for Rebel, perfect for something like XSi, but 40D is bigger not to mention the lens size. I owned 17-85 and that one was fairly compact but this lens is considerably bigger. Funny thing, I bought DSLR to get small compact camera to carry around instead my MF Mamiya 645ProTL, and ended up with combo that is at least as big.. oh well, I like it, but need fitting bag.

Dave, just remember that I said the Messenger 3 is fine (with some moving around of internal padding). I would get a Messenger 4, alternatively. Still snug, but I like it that way. What you'll get is a little more width for the lens.. depthwise, I think they're the same. This means the camera just fits to allow closure of the flap.

With most bags, you'll have some extra pockets for the battery charger.

17-55 - Buy the hood. It's very prone to flare.

And dust. Be sure to zip your bag; don't just rely on the flap alone if you get that type.

Also check out the many LowePro models. The 40D with 17-55mm with hood and filter and lens cap fits a big with interior dimensions of 7.5 x 5.5" and Lowepro has several different models of shoulder bags that would accomodate that. I particularly like the Stealth Reporter series, for their ability to add at any time any of the externally mounted LowePro Lens Cases and accessory cases, which you can easily swap to suit the lens FL needed for any given outing.

Dave, the Topload Zoom 1 won't really do. I have one and when I put my 17-55 on my XTi it will close, but only if I let out the webbing all the way for the clasp. The backside of the body extends just beyond the back of the body seating area in the case. The 40D would be a bit thicker, I imagine.

Even if it would fit like my XTi, in neither case would I even consider putting an extra battery in the web pouch on the inside of the top cover. It will bash up against the back of the camera body pretty good, IME.
