I think you should try the Lowepro Topload Zoom 2 as I dont think the 1 would be large enough, or the even better Toploader 70 AW.

The 4MDH would work as long as you don't have a grip.

The Tamrac holster series has a flap that covers the zipper on the lid...a consideration if you get caught out in the rain as I have on more than one occasion.

I have no experience with the LowePro holsters but from the online photos it appears to be just a zippered lid with no protective flap? Perhaps a LowePro user can clarify?

I'm seriously looking at either Lowepro Topload Zoom 2, or Tamrac Pro Digital Zoom 7. Both these bags are similar size, and both seem very suitable for my small outfit, fitting just 40D camera with that 5" lens, and maybe a few small things ( I wouldn't mind to fit that charger ,extra CF card, and either USB cable (for camera-to-PC image transfer), or some ultra small USB CF reader.

Crumplers are great! great construction and they dont look like a camera bag imho. I've got a 6mdh for my 30d grip with 17-40 attached, 70-200 2.8is, 580exii. Its a little tight, but works well.

While you're considering various options, I might throw in the Kata H-14 Holster bag, or its slightly larger cousin, H-16, if you need to fit the 40D with the grip...

I am in a similar boat in that I want to carry a 40D with 17-55 lens attached but I want something that will secure to my body with crossed shoulder straps and waistbelt. I have so much trouble finding a backpack that will carry gear and photo equipment that I've decided to continue using my all-purpose backpack and carry my camera in a holster on my chest. I can carry spare lenses in the mesh pockets on the pack.

But I need something relatively streamlined and which can be secured to my body to prevent it from flopping around, so bags are out. I know the LowePro Toploader 1 has waist and shoulder straps. If I raise the holster high enough on my chest, I'm pretty sure I can wear a backpack over it; the waistbelt of the pack would run under the waistbelt of the holster. If this is not feasible, please let me know.

With this albeit bulky setup, I always have my camera+lenses at the ready. I'm considering this as an alternative to the pricey Think Tank 360 rotation backpack.

Dave - Have you taken your 40D to a store and just test it in a few bags? You can get a sense of what dimensions you need. Most stores (at least around here) carry Lowepro, Crumpler, and Tamrac.

I use a Tamrac Velocity 9 most of the time.
I can get my 40D+17-55IS with hood attached (the right way around) and i keep the lens cap off so its all ready to go. Plenty of room to put my 70-220F/4 IS and/or Canon HF10 video camera, a prime or two or my 420EX flash.
I can even just about get the 40D+ 70-200 with hood on although it sits at an angle.

The think tank digital holster 20 is perfect. It holds my 40D with the 17-55 lens hood reversed, and then you can extend the bag if you want it to hold it with the hood forward. Also, with it extended it would hold the 40D with a 70-200 2.8. Think tank makes awesome stuff. The only thing is whether you can find it in stock. Comes with an all weather cover, and a divider if you have a smaller lens mounted you can store another underneath. The other nice thing is they are shaped perfectly for the 40D.

I ordered black Lowepro Topload Zoom 2, it was $29+s/h+tax at Freestylephoto, so under $40 delivered. I looked at several recommended bags at Circuit City and Best Buy, also I think Ritzcamera had one of those models we spoke about... I decided to give a try to Lowepro mainly because I have good experience with them. I own Mini Trekker AWII for several years (the backpack made several overseas trips, always heavily overloaded, without losing a single stitch), also have older, small TLZ topload; they're build to last, lightweight but very well padded. My concern with Topload Zoom 2 is whether the thickness (5") will be enough for 40D but I think so. The bag should be here today, I'll post picture how it fits.
