In Green Box mode? If the flash doesn't come up automatically, push the button and make the flash come out.

That's what the P mode is for.

Your camera is fine. Flash can't be forced in basic modes - take a look at page 99 of your manual.

I would have looked at the manual if I could find it  I always keep it in my camera bag, but when I went to get it out it was gone. I Tore the house apart looking for it to no avail.

Thanks for the answer to my dumb question though. I feel  just asking.

Don't. It's a perfectly reasonable question.

I don't have a 40D, just the manual (xarqi's link) that I downloaded when I was planning to get one.

I got a 30D instead and use the 30D pdf 100 times as much as the printed manual.

"P mode" is basically the "full auto mode" with the ability to allow you to adjust it. So just put it in "P mode" and pop-up the flash. It would be the same as "auto mode" with flash, as long as you don't turn any of the dials.

Got to P mode or any other mode. push the button to make the flash pop then go back to A. Then take pictures.
I'm not too sure if this is gonna work.
