I recently purchased a XTI which I use mostly for car racing photos.
Being a hobbyist I take pictures from the stands and I am usually happy with the results. My question is would it be worth it to go from my 75-300usm III which I used with my 35mm Rebel to the 75-300 IS lens. This would be about the limit of my budget .
Also would anyone have any tips about shooting from the stands.
What about teleconverters for taking pre race shots which are usually quite far from where I am sitting.
Again I am just a hobbyist trying to learn to take better pictures
Thanks

seems like a bit of handshake in the second picture, so IS would help in that case.

however, if you really want better pictures, i know its over your budget for now, try looking at the canon ef 70-200mm f/4 L USM. yes, its a L lens and so that means that its expensive, but it also offers you quick focusing, a larger aperture and greater satisfaction.

Short answer, yes.

If your budget is limited, you might also consider the 55-250 IS. You'd lose 50 mm, but you'd gain IS and sharpness.

It would make a difference, but improved technique would make a more noticeable difference I'd say.

I just got the 55-250 IS to replace my 75-300... the lens was about the same price as I paid for the 75-300 over 5 years ago. and exponentially better.

Most tracks I go to allow for spectators to buy pit passes. Buy a pit pass and shoot from the infield if at all possible rather than from the stands through the fencing.
And +1 for your technique. Practice makes perfect.

As for the 70-300 IS or the 55-250 IS lens choice, I'd need to investigate the focus speed and accuracy more to give an informed opinion myself since I have no experience with either of these lenses for shooting motor sports. I'm certain someone here has shot in these areas and could provide some samples and opinions.

Yes. Examples of what that lens can do with a similar body:

Don't. :)

There's always going to be a fence in the way, which will be a problem unless you can get right next to the fence. The best angles will be from the infield. Getting images from the grandstands limits you to angles over the fence, which usually limits you to views of the cars on the backstretch.

DC fan:That is a great shot. I hope I will be able to take shots like that.

My wife goes to the track with me and she's great about letting me go to these short tracks around Chicago. But I think i would be pushing it to drag her through the pits. I don't mind shooting from the stands I am just trying to learn to shoot better.
I think I rush my shots too much .
Any suggestions about techniques, is it better to focus and follow the cars around and shoot or just focus right b4 you take the shot.
Like I said in my first post I just enjoy taking pictures at the track just for my own satisfaction as a memory of the day. I wen tto a lot of short tracks when I was younger and have no pictures from them and they have closed down or I have not been able to get back to so i just want to have some reminders from the track.
I think I will look at the lenses that were mentioned in the earlier posts.
Amazon.com seems to have reasonable prices any feedback about ordering from them.
Any recommendations for a tele-converter
I just joined this forum a short time ago and have learned more in that short period of time
Thanks for any help
