Being a lazy sod, I've gotten very used to using the Microsoft thumbnail viewer to pluck out shots worth PP'ing (and those to ditch immediately!), and since getting the 1D mkIII I haven't been able to get this working - does anyone have this working for mk III RAW files under XP?

Try using faststone viewer. It's free and is really good.

What about just using DPP or Zoombrowser?

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

To do in XP (with Microsoft tools), I think you will need two things:

1) Windows Live Photo Gallery... an optional add-on for XP (from Microsoft):
http://get.live.com/photogallery/overview (external link)

and

2) The RAW codec package (It looks like the 1ds and the 1d Mark III are supported, as well as XP support.)
http://www.microsoft.com …oto/downloads/codecs.aspx (external link)

Finally, here's the page from Microsoft where I pieced this all together:
http://www.microsoft.com/prophoto/downloads/raw.aspx (external link)

Obviously there are many tools out there to help do this (I use LR for my sorting/culling; and also use Vista, so can't vouch for how this works in XP) but perhaps this will let you continue to do it the way you've been comfortable with, but with some added features to boot. Or you'll discover some of the tools the others have suggested are more up to the task. Take care.

I've tried every RAW thumbnail viewer available - including several like dpMagic Plus that were not previously mentioned - and they all seemed to have some weakness.

So I eventually bit the bullet and purchased Directory Opus (external link) from GPS Software. Directory Opus is a Windows Explorer replacement application and a major feature for me is that it comes with a plug-in that uses DCRAW to preview RAW files. So instead iof seeing the JPEG embedded in the RAW file, I am able to see the actual RAW file. Its fairly expensive but if you want accurate conversion and previews its worth the investment.

If you aren't aware, DCRAW (external link) is indisputably the best RAW converter around all the major RAW viewers/converters uses elements of the DCRAW code in their software. DCRAW will read any RAW file without the need for codecs, updates, etc. See the list of applications that use DCRAW on the link earlier in the paragraph.

You can also read details of the RAW plug-in on the developer's page but bear in mind that the interface has been revamped and it looks different from the images on the page: http://www.pretentiousname.com/jp2raw/ (external link)

Another vote for Faststone. It's very convenient and views jpegs, RAW and other formats transparently. When viewing RAW it can either view the embedded jpeg for speed or the full RAW file for detail. It also shows EXIF info.
