first gen eos rebel problem

was at bristol tn shooting photos this weekend and my rebel freaked out . when i take a photo the shutter clicked and the preview goes black .it flashes but doesn't show a preview .the photo counter works . so we went to best buy before they closed and i pulled the card and put it in another camera .nothing no photos ? any ideas ?
i changed cards and batts didn't change anything ?

could be the shutter. 1-800-OK-CANON would be your best bet.

When you say "preview" you mean on the rear LCD or looking through the viewfinder?
If it's the latter, then it must be a mirror problem. The first gen rebel had this sort of problem with the secondary mirror (focus mirror behind the main mirror) hanging loose due to a plastic pin that breaks sooner or later and no longer holding the mirror in place, thus the light path to the eye (and sensor) was blocked.
