Awesome set of pics! Nice job of panning in #1.

The fireballs were produced by pyrotechnician Rich Gibson, (external link) who has been a featured performer at the Indianapolis Air Show for the last few years. It's a great show that has to be seen in person to appreciate. A line of WWII bombers makes passes along the air show line, and as each airplane makes its "bombing run," Gibson sets off a fireball. (external link)

As always, that "wall of fire" was more spectacular than the picture makes it appear - even on a 90-degree day and with the charges set on the far side of the airfield, you could still feel the heat. Fortunately, the announcer tipped off what was going to happen, and I had just enough time to switch from a telephoto lens to a wide angle lens to get the shot.

Thanks, it does look pretty impressive.

For those who enjoy watching things blow up, a sequence:

That was easy to see because it was at ground level. At altitude, the sun got in the way. Since the show line was to the south, everything airborne was heavily backlit and you were lucky to get anything usable.

The high point of the show's final day came at the one point that the winds kicked up a bit. Someone's tent canopy from the general admission area blew away, crossed a taxiway and rolled into the grass, heading toward the runway - and the thing landed right side up on its legs and stopped. A couple of ground crew had to track it down and retrieve it. :)
