I just inherited a Star-D SDG480 flash (Nikon mount) from my late father-in-law. It strikes me as very similar to Vivitar's lineup of flashes, although that may just be superficial. Haven't found much info at all regarding the Star-D online, and the instructions that came with it are lacking, at best. I also have access to an Achiever 260AF (Canon mount) from my wife's old Rebel 35mm. The Achiever is a mediocre flash, but it's free so I might as well put it to good use (I use a 430EX on my XTi for those who are interested in such things).
I want to put these two to work as studio/portable strobes. Neither of these third party flashes have PC sockets, so I'll need to add hot-shoe to household synch adapters. But I'm pretty clueless as to what's quality, junk, bargain, luxury... At this point I'm thinking of making them optical slaves via the Wein Peanut, so any advice and direction you folks could give me would be greatly appreciated.
