I thought this was a good shot until I examined it more closely. Please tell what you feel is wrong.

Thanks

Hi Mike,

Out of focus?
Cropped too much?
You can't see the water so the dog could be walking on his hind legs on land?

Thanks, I agree. Does the dummy look in focus?

Thanks Flo,

I don't know if I will ever get good enough to take these kind of shots. No, it is not my dog. I have a 9 mo old pup that replaced (bad word, dog was irreplacable) a field trial trained 14 yr old who died last year. I guess I am trying to decide whether I have the energy to train another dog. I think I am getting to old.

BTW this was a panned shot, do you think it is motion blur or did I just miss the spot entirely?

Mike, has this been cropped? If it was, post the entire shot.....for anything in action, panning is a skill that is learned from LOTS of practice and error.lol..even handheld I know you could have focused on the dog, getting yourself a much wider DOF?

It also look really compressed, maybe alot was lost in transfer?

Your camera has a square sensor? I like this crop better. Your first was so tight that all context was lost.

I think that you have to plan out how to give a better sense of what's going on in this scene. I don't know what dock diving is. The first shot was virtually without any context. It was unclear what the dog was doing. The person on the right and the chimney made the background too distracting.

In the second shot, I can now see that the dog was in mid-leap. However, where's the dock? And from where did all that water dripping off the dog come? It looks like he's going to come crashing down on hard ground? Is that the way it works? Background is still too busy.

Thanks everyone. LeuceDeuce I don't think I follow "your camera has a square sensor?"

It sounds like your giving constructive criticism but I must be to dense to get your meaning....

The first part of my response was me being smart :) You said it was uncropped, yet it's a square format so it's still a crop.

The rest of what I said was the constructive part :)

Thanks Flo. It looks like a challenging event to get a good shot.

Ah So, You are absolutely correct. I forgot that I had cropped the cropped original.

Back to the drawing board, thanks again...
