I am looking for a few hints and tips from other experienced photographers on proper exposures for shooting subjects of lighter and darker complexion within the same frame. Too much light will wash out the lighter subject and not enough light will darken the darker subject. What is the best technique to work around this challenge.

1. Improving darker subjects lighting without over-exposing lighter subjects.

2. Prevent flash reflexion from darker subject. Not enough flash will create dark spots and too much flash can over-expose lighter subject.

3. Would the experts recommend using flash in situations where there are lighter and darker subjects within the frame?

I'm not sure if this will help but what I tend to do is to use a slightly harder edge light on the darker subject and a softer light on the lighter subject. Here are a few examples.

Any object or person in the background gets a harder light, regardless of their tonal value.

These are great examples to start. Is your light source strobe lights or from a flash gun EX 580 flash gun?

These were shot with two photogenics studio strobes firing thru a softbox and umbrella and one sunpak 383 speedlight with no modifier.

Just expose evenly and properly and don't worry about it. Dark skinned people will be darker in the image, because, well, they reflect less light. Just don't pump a lot more light onto them than fair skinned people or it'll look unnatural.
