I just exchanged my G2 for a G6 (Best Buy PSP can be nice), and I'm a bit puzzled by the RAW+JPEG option. It appears that the jpeg is embedded in the raw data--according to this site, http://www.dcresource.com …hot_g6-review/index.shtml (external link),

The RAW + JPEG option isn't what it sounds like. The camera doesn't save a separate JPEG image along with the RAW file like Canon's SLR cameras. Rather, it embeds a JPEG thumbnail that allows for the zoom and scroll (AKA playback zoom) feature and image playback on the camera or the PC. Why would you want to use a larger thumbnail? The answer is, to check the detail in the image. If you use the zoom and scroll feature a lot, a higher resolution thumbnail will let you see more detail when zoomed in.

Is there any way to extract the jpeg? My old version of Canon's Raw Image Converter 2 doesn't even recognize the RAW files. PS does, but doesn't offer anything other than the RAW data. Am I missing something trivial?

I don't know if Canon's software can, but BreezeBrowser can so it's possible alright.
My experience is with G5, but I don't see why it should be any different for G6.

Breezebrowser can read the RAW files, or it can also extract the embedded (Large) jpeg?

It's interesting, because the Raw Image Converter, v2, shows an option to extract embedded jpeg--it's just greyed out when I have a RAW file loaded. Looking at the options for ZoomBrowser EX, I don't see a similar option (granted, I'm looking at the software manual--haven't installed it, and don't really plan to).

Thanks!

Well, you asked if there is a way to extract the JPG files and we both know Canon software can read CRW sooooo... yes, I meant that BB can extract the JPGs.

Sorry, just re-read your original post, and I'm not sure how I parsed it originally, but yeah, it does seem pretty obvious now. :)
Thanks! May be time to invest in Breezebrowser, finally--I've been eying it since I got my original G2.
