One thing I want to learn is how to really judge a photo. I got several shots of my fiancee's flowers today, and changed my aperture to change the DOF some.

I'm going to put the best ones up and I want to know how you decide to change what.

This is the best one, focus seems good, background is decently focused to set the scene (The scene that I need to fix the washout, but that's another subject.) I used my 17-85 lens, I had a polarizer on there but didn't play with it much.

Same scene, but shot at f5.0 instead of f9.0 with the first one. The leaves started to defocus some, so I think maybe a tick or two higher would be better.

This one really needed the tripod to be lower, and a little further back to get more of the plant. Plus, the top came out a little out of focus.

OK, fire away. Tell me what you would do and how you came to that conclusion.

The light (or lack there of) makes these pictures look very flat. Also IMO they are taken very straight. I feel like a better angle may have livened them up a lot. You are in a good spot to shoot though Griffin rocks.

I never, Not once claimed to read your post...

1 - Flowers work better from a slight angel, head-on usually doesn't work. Also being centered isn't working either. Get closer, sometimes the innerads (Yes, I am allowed to make up my own words) of the flower are more interesting the the leafs.

2 - If the plant is running straight up and down, you probably need to shot it in portrait rather than landscape. Also don't center it.

Also, there is barely some Depth of Field, check the dof tables (external link) until you get a better idea on how your lens behaves.
