Hi,

I just upgraded from a 30D to 40D, and spent the weekend getting the hang of it. One of the reasons I purchased it was because I really liked the idea of having custom modes on the main mode dial (C1, C2, C3). I think it's great to be able to make adjustments and then simply return to a known starting point.

The one problem I am having with it is that when I am using my camera and it goes into sleep mode after a minute or so when I activate it again by tapping the shutter button half way it is also returning back to the default settings.

Is there anyway to avoid? I know this isn't the way with Tv or Av, etc.

Thanks

Adam

Some people don’t like it, but that’s how Canon designed it, that’s how it works.
The only work around is to extend Auto power off time..

Sorry, as Hermeto noted, it's designed to work the way you described. With my 40D, I just don't let it go to sleep if I'm shooting in a C mode.

In order to do as Mark suggests, you don't have to keep the sleep function off all the time, just make the extended time part of the registered C-mode.

Thanks all, this is what I figured, just wanted to make sure it wasn't just me.

It's really annoying especially when you've made changes you want to save, like say changes to a user defined picture style, then it goes to sleep before you save it and you lose everything you've changed. This happened to me a few times before I realized that it doesn't save the changed picture style automatically like it does in Av or Tv mode.

Take tzalman’s advice guys, this is a great tip!
Save C1 – C3 settings with long auto shut off time, and return to short for everything else..

This is something that has been bugging me since I started using the C modes... I never thought about extending the auto shut off time and then saving the setting. Thanks for the helpful tip!

I was really dissapointed to find this behavior in the C modes, I thought it was going to be one of the best features of the 40D for me. When shooting at the track I could have a pan setting, a head on setting, an aperture setting for shallow DOF. I can't pre-program those because of varying light conditions though. I was hoping each C# mode would just remember how they were last setup even when switched away/back.

Oh well.
