Hoping to find out the filter size for the TC-DC58A Telephoto lens for my Pro1. It's a huge piece of glass and I want to protect it ASAP with a UV filter.

Thanks Rock, but I am talking about the 1.5x telphoto lens. It's at least 82mm. More I am sure. I just need to know the exact size so I can order one.

 Yeah. I read it wrong. According to the &H (INVALID EMAIL) website it doesn't have a front filter thread, but it would certainly be bigger than 58mm. Must be one chunky lens :-).

Yeah, I noticed the "no front filter thread" description on the B&Hsite. They got that wrong. It is threaded for a filter.

Hmm. I just had a look for info at Canon's website, but with no luck. Might be worth sending an e-mail ? Or perhaps going into the camera shop and seeing which size fits. Good luck with it :-)

Thanks again Rock. Yeah, I went to Canon's site and I couldn't even find the lens, period. I also went to a local camera shop last night and they didn't have anything that big. I would try calling around a few different shops, but the first question they'll ask is, what size are you looking for. I guess I'll just have to drive around with the lens from shop to shop. Again, thank you for trying to help me out.

Airedale1... what are your impressions of the TC-DC58A? Is it worth the money? Does it add considerable weight to the Pro1? How about handling... does it make the camera awkward to hold? I might be looking to purchase one in the future and just wanted to see if it might be a worthwhile addition to this camera.

My initial impression was............... Oh, my God....Why doesn't this thing have a filter on it.

Seriously though, I have always immediately upon purchase of a new lens, added a UV filter or skylight 1A to protect the lens. The rationale being that it's always cheaper to replace a filter than the lens. Also, for cleaning, you will only be messing with the filter.

When I bought my G1, adding a protective filter was not an option until Lensmate offered the adapter, which I happily purchased immediately.

Curiously on page 178 of the Pro1 user guide it states in regards to the TC-DC58A, "Do not attach lens hoods or filters to the tele-converter," yet it is threaded for one???

But, I digress:) To answer your question about the added weight, it weighs about 1lb and it requires the LA-DC58C adapter which is threaded for a tripod, so that the Pro1 will not have to bear the weight.

I have yet to even try mine for fear of a crazed flying insect or other type of UFO smashing into the unprotected lens.

My first suggestion would be to take a ruler and measure the diameter of the front lens.

There are not so many different filter sizes...

Best regards,
Andy

Okay, I just finished speaking to Canon Tech Support and they informed me that what I thought were threads, are only concentric rings presumably there for attaching a certain type of lens cover. Open closer inspection, I can see that they are correct and that they are simply concentric circles and not threads as I first thought.

Now, this still leaves me with an unprotected $200.00 lens. Am I just being paranoid here or am I correct in thinking that such a lens should be protected with a filter?

Also, I asked Tech Support if they could confirm for me that since my Pro1 came with the firmware update, might it also have had the dust issue addressed before it left the factory. They told me, that was information that they could not divulge. :(

Well, anyways I am very happy with the Pro1. It has exceeded my expectations. But to tell you the truth the conversation with tech support on the issues I raised, left me frustrated.

There are also thousand dollar lenses that don't allow fitting a filter because of the curvature of the front element.

Better be careful if you don't have a filter fitted.

On the other hand, I've used an Olympus WCON-08 and Kenko LD-20T on my G2 without filters for about 2 years without any problems.

But then, I only had them on the camera for a part of the total time.

Best regards,
Andy

Why not look for a 58mm filter which comes with threads that will allow for the TC teleconverter to attach to it, then go out and buy a 80 or so mm lens cap to go over your teleconverter lens.

Probably the only way youll get the lens protected while getting the advantage of combining you teleconverter with a filter.
