FEC question on 30D

Probably a stupid question

But on the 30D if you have the built in flash up, and set FEC to anything other than standard, and then close the built in flash, does the FEC then become EC as ive noticed it still displays the icon in the viewfinder

Or is it just a reminder that you have FEC set ?

Are you seeing the FEC setting in the viewfinder when you half-press the shutter button or only when press the FEC button (the rightmost button on top of the camera)? If you're seeing it whenever the shutter is pressed, that's the EC and not the FEC. To set (or see) the FEC, you need to press the FEC button first.
