Today was my kids' first day of school. The lighting is lousy at my house! I tried the backyard but the sun was too bright. So we decided to do the front porch where it was more shady. But I hate the way the color looks on the photos. Can anyone help me fix it? I'd love to know what you do so that I can try to edit some others I have too. Thanks in advance!

Your white balance is too cool... if you're shooting RAW bring it up a bit in your raw converter. I can't do any colour work on the monitor I'm currently on but I'm sure someone else will...

Here is a feable attempt. If you had the raw file it would be easier to correct.

Sorry, I don't have the RAW file because I didn't shoot it in RAW. Darn!

all i did was add a contrast mask, auto color balance in gimp + manually add a little magenta to the midtones, resize and sharpen.

what kind of "color" are you expecting? the color of skin tone or the color of the background?

I am most concerned about the color of the skin tone.

Thanks!

Adjusting in raw would be easiest but you can adjust the jpeg as well. I had a quick crack at it, you might want to play with the settings a bit. All I did was to adjust curves. I boosted the red a bit, blue toned down a bit. upped the contrast a little and sharpened a little.

okay in the first photo I adjusted just the WB in adobe raw...but in the 2nd I processed it as I would normally process a photo like this...so how much work you want to do on a photo ultimately affects the look too.

I had to make some educated assumptions about colors since I could not find anything to verify WB, but perfect WB notwithstanding, creative WB is often better.

If this edit is close to what you are looking for, I will be happy to post all of the editing details.

REVISED: The large online version has been deleted. The attached version below is somewhat compressed so the colors are not quite the same.

Added contrast, little more saturation, and a little tighter crop.

I only did 2 things for this: Used the "Color Cast" correction tool in Photoshop Elements 2.0 (I used the white part of her dress to sample "white", then I increased the saturation by 20%.

I don't know why such a usefull feature is kept out of the Expensive Version of Photoshop!

Does anybody else find the Foundation wall distracting, I'm surprised it has not dissapeared in any of the edit's?

Very nice job Bill, I would love to know what steps you used to color correct the Temperture as well as the rest of the workflow....

Removing backgrounds from close-up portrait type shots is just asking for trouble because there is no completely satisfactory way to blend hair into the new background. The ways that I treat distracting backgrounds is to do one of the following: ignore them when it isn't too bad; darken or lighten it depending on foreground and background colors and brightness; or mute the background by reducing saturation and contrast and also using "negative clarity" (something that is both a new feature and a new oxymoron all at the same time in ACR 4.5). Sometimes, I will also do a selective lens blur on the background.

Later today after I finish my newsletter deadline, I will try to find time to outline the editing that I did.
