50D + 18-200 kit = $1599, according to Canon's Chuck Westfall:

http://www.pdngearguide.com …71f62cc176182978d9e395dbe (external link)

Lots are hatin' on the superzoom, but given the quality (and success) of Tamron's 18-250 and Sigma's 18-200 OS, not to mention Canon's own recent 2 IS kit lenses, this is very good news indeed.

It's not just for soccer moms. Big zoom range has caught me scores of great captures that would've been missed in changing lenses. And great for PJ work. And with the new high ISO range, you don't always need the aperture you used to. Remember that 1600 was a barrier in film days, and 1600 with a 2.8 is the same as 12800 with an f8, exposure-wise...

Cheers.

Adam

ISO 12800...cool! I'll be able to get alot more milage from my 70-200/2.8 for indoor sports, etc. Maybe I don't need that 135L after all. Of course I do!;)

Now, I just need someone to take my 40D of my hands...

Hmm, this is actually kinda good...I just updated to the 40D in June. I am looking at FF now, and when the 5D MII comes out it may be perfect timing to update.

Only things I am envious on the 50D are the enhanced LCD and (once the testing pics come out) the "cleaner" high ISO shots. Otherwise, I'm perfectly content with how the 40D has performed, especially with some awesome glass :-)

For people like me who still own a 20D, this is going to be a great upgrade. A few generations later, the difference in AF, ISO capability, Megapixels and a LCD screen nearly twice the size will be very nice changes. So I'm really looking forward to October.

But it hardly seems like Canon is marketing this as a must have for 40D owners. The cameras are close enough that I'm sure the lucky 40D owners can survive with only marginal upgrade envy. And I don't think there really is any ground to complain that it's not revolutionary against the 40D. It's just a better camera to compete in current conditions, not a must have replacement.

I've slowly bought new glass over the past 3 years. Now the time has come for a new body. Much rejoicing at the thought of a new toy ensues! :)

Hmmm....upgrade from the 30D? Not too sure yet...Possibly...

HDMI output is probably instated to test out for an upcoming movie mode, such as in the new Nikons.

The 50D is looking quite attractive to me now and mainly for these reasons:

1. Hi-Res LCD

2. 15MP (almost double the 30D)

3. Micro-AF adjustments (This is huge IMO because everyone hates buying a lens whether it be new or used and having front or back focus issues.)

4. ISO12800 (If it's usable in a pinch, then that would be great)

5. Highlight-tone priority (I was just shooting my kids at the park last night during sunset and could have really used this feature)

6. Improved AF (People have been saying how much the AF on the 40D is alot better than the 30D, I can't imagine what it's like on the 50D)

Is the 50D a premature replacement for the 40D?

There seem to be some nice features over the 40D

At last the LCD is a bteer resolution up to 920K dotd from 230K dots.

I can't see any reason to upgrade from a 40D especially at the price it's at now. I just got my 40D + 28-135mm IS kit a month ago for $1080 from Dell. To me, there's no "killer feature" that justifies the $720 price difference in camera bodies. Obviously it's different for previous xxD users, but the only reason I'll upgrade from the 40D is FF.

Bodies - Digital: Canon EOS-40D, Canon A710 IS, Film: Canon EOS-3 with PB-E2 Power Booster
Lenses - Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM, Tamron 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 AF
Scanner - Canon CanoScan 8800F

My progression of DSLRs has been 300D to 30D. I am uncertain if my next move will be to an xD or an xxD. In any case I will wait until another model is out in order to take advantage of the price break on the replaced model. Maybe that replaced model will be the 50D when the 60D comes out. The quickness of the replacement of the 40D tells me it will probably not be the 40D as do the many accounts of AF issues with the 40D.

At the moment I am more interested in the new 18-200 IS and look forward to seeing in depth reviews of the production version. I like the Tamron 28-75 as my current walk-around, but the extra range on both ends would be nice to have on many occasions.

The 50D will be sold alongside the 40D until year-end. Who knows what will happen to the 40D then... replaced or simply discontinued.

I don't see too big of a difference...
ISO
50D : 100-6400, extended to 12800 (this will be a crap load of noise, with all those extra megapixel squeezed onto only 0.1mm x 0.1mm, these hig hISO levels will make the photos NOISSSSSSSY...

I agree.....makes me wonder about image quality as well....will the extra 5 megs really make that much of a difference? maybe the digic 4 will compensate.....
