So now all the 30d owners saying the 40d is no good will be replaced with 40d owners saying the same about the 50d?

We should all totally forget about the 50D and focus on the 60D.

That happened on day #1:

What surprised me is the number of folks who responded negatively, almost 2 to 1. I would have thought that on a equipment forum most would be happy to see a new piece of gear whether they planned to upgrade or not.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

That's a bad poll. There is no option for "Looks like a great camera but I'm not upgrading now". As it stands, if one isn't upgrading then one is 'negative'.

this goes for ANY tech gadgets...not only that, but the retail price remains the same. With the only change that you get "better" gizmos. The IBM PC sold for about $6,000 when it first came out. A top of the line PC...cost the same today, but with 1000% improvement in tech. Hard disk have larger buffers than the original PC had in total RAM.

Photo gear is NOT an investment -- well *maybe some* it is just a tool to enjoy and/or to make a living of. Most cars have no book value after 5 years -- any gear in companies books. So most pros get another one. Why? taxes and write-off. As a corporation you can buy up to $25,000USD in hw/gear/equipt. for you businnes (not hobby) and deduct it from taxes. After that leasing is the one with write off benefits.

I never understood the benefits of leasing... and this non-sense about depreciation...until I started a corporation...:)

Now there was some beef to be had, there!

I learned that there is no such thing as "the real price" except for each individual transaction...it "happens" if the buyer thinks it's cheap and the seller thinks it's expensive.

For instance, if I start counting the price of getting something repaired, installed, checked up, calibrated etc., taking in account the price of what I charge per hour and the time I lose, oh, wow, it's Christmas for the recyclers!

I find it hard to think of a consumer product where the price you pay for the quality would be justified in terms of reduced maintenance costs or resale price.
Maybe a Rolex?
I am not talking about collector items here.

We should all focus on our subjects and enjoy taking photographs and make the most of whatever equipment we have -- always wishing for the next new toy is especially counter-productive when one starts to tell oneself "If only I had that then I could take really fantastic shots" whilst sub-consciously making the decision to put in less effort until that new whatever has been obtained. An attitude that the manufacturers and retailers must love especially when the same desire is reborn shortly after being satisfied.
