First 50D review!!

So instead of 40D vs 5D topics, you will see 50D vs 1D topics? Uh oh, the 50D is clearly a turbo charged AF machine?

Will need to give this a hands on for myself.

when the 40d was announced the early reviews showed it was a 5d slayer in both IQ and ISO noise.

my take is you should wait six months after the camera hits the market and you'll finally start to see some objective reviews .

You know you can't say that here. No matter how many sources you have, they will never believe their 'holy grail' 1D can entertain the thought of being inferior in any way concievable.

Me? IF this turns out to avoid the 1DM3 debacle, it's the upgrade I've been waiting for. Of course having (practically just) bought the 40D less than a year ago, it's a real pain having to upgrade again so soon.

you know how the hypemeisters are...they did the same thing with the 40d and i won't even go into recent lens releases .

Good thing my 3-week old 40D is still valid for another 6mths.
I never like to buy brand new products, if I can help it. Would rather wait for the firmware and bugs to be weeded out.

How can he having never shot with a 20D or 30D or 40D say the 50D is faster AF? WTF?

The only thing that would make me look at the 50D is at least a full stop better ISO without loss of detail from aggressive NR.... and only after the price stabilizes.

And I hate that silver function dial

i want to know if the af improves the performance on all lenses, like the 85L II.

If this new model's AF really is as described, plus a big jump in MP and a much improved LCD, you can bet there are a couple 1D-series "N"s hiding somewhere in the wings right now.

Note that the reviewer doesn't seem to know how many MP one of his own cameras captures, either.

Now I just wish they'd settle the "5D Mark II" question once and for all so we can quit having to read the "Should I buy or should I wait" posts!

Hmmm... if Canon is letting leaks out like this on one model, maybe it's a smokescreen for some other interesting things about to be announced.

You speak the truth.

Having owned the 40D and recalled the debate vs the 5D, I can definitely tell, after nearly a year of shooting, that the 40D's ISO 800 is very good, I would say generally comparable to the 5D. Mind you, I like both cameras if not I would not have coughed up $ to buy them nor kept them (I sell onwards quickly when I don't like, as many in the BST section will testify)

ISO 1600 is when the 5D begins to stretch what it is really capable of and ISO 3200 is where it still wipes the floor with the 40D.

We need to let the dust settle first.

Unfortunately, when the 5DMk2 comes first, I am likely to lose my head and just buy it anyway

I guess he is going by the fact that the focusing on the 1D is faster than the xxD cameras.

i used in africa for WA shots on game drives and as a back-up.

when i had the 5d i was using the 30d as much because i was doing more wildlife stuff.

i may get the 40d or 50d for our katmai trip next year tho. i'm fine with 2nd or 3rd generation cameras for my back-up and once we cut through all the wailing and gnashing of teeth and constant threats of going over to "the dark side" they are all great cameras .

Cool yes, the workload for my system is almost evenly split between my current 40D and the 5D. I am likely to keep the 5D as my FF backup once the 5D2 hits. The 5D has always been special and will still be long after the new cameras are out. It has outlasted a 20D, 30D, 1D classic and 1D2.

The D700 called me to the dark side, but the 24-105 IS USM told me to stay

All the other features are nice but give me more in focus keepers using AF servo and I'd be happy. I considered the Mark III but it's just a little problematic. Who needs nice files when they are out of focus? And the reason I'm buying an AF camera is because my manual focusing skills are not that great.

or you can wait a year and get a hefty discount. they're all great cameras really.

the only camera that i outgrew rather quickly was the 300d.
