Which 18-55 to buy? Mark II for $50 or IS for $130?

Hey all,

I have the opportunity to buy a used 18-55 EF-S II kit lens for $50, or the other option would be to buy a new 18-55 IS lens from Amazon's seller base for $130.

I've just bought an XTi body and this, along with a Nifty Fifty, will be my first lenses and will be the first time owning a dSLR.

Is the IS version of the 18-55 lens worth the extra $80?

I would think that IS would be worth the extra - it gives you the ability to hand hold at lower shutter speeds. I've never used the IS version though.

Go for the IS not only because of the IS. Lots of people are saying IQ wise, IS version is much much better.

The IS version is infinitely better. It is a great deal for the price, and the non IS 18-55 is pretty much worthless.

Do it and don't look back.

Another IS vote here. Had both, sold my non-IS.

Get the IS version, much better lens and more than worth the price difference.

Add one more to the pile..

I had the non IS and replaced it with IS...MUCH happier with IS!

The 18-55 IS is a great all-around lens. IQ wise, it's a much better value for your dollar than the non-IS version.

(Mine whichever it may be when it arrives. Have a 20D coming Friday probably that has one of the 18-55's lenses).

+1 on IS. worth the extra money.

If budget allow, get one with IS anytime, for any lens. Once you use IS, and go back to non-IS, you will realized how important and useful it is.

As for the kit lens, the IS version no only has IS, but also build much better. Definitely worth the additional $$
