I have a 40D and need to control both the onboard flash and a couple of ABs.

I was thinking of getting a LG4X from AB, but will plugging that into the camera disable or hinder the 580 that would off on the hot shoe? Can you use both at the same time?

You can't (or shouldn't) mix ETTL with studio strobes. Given that I would say you should be fine. As I read the LG4X info you still can have optical slave tripping of the Bees. The 580EX flash would be on-camera (again, not a good idea) in manual mode.

And yes, you can use the camera's hotshoe and PC port at the same time.

So should I tie everything in with PocketWizards? Or Radio poppers? Or not use the Canon flashes mixed in?

Really, without the 430 the only thing I would need is a hair light. The 580 isn't really useful in my setup, I was just going to use it as a master.

The Canon flashes are my mobile kit, as the ABs stay here.

You probably shouldn't use strobes and speedlite together, but they work fine. Just make sure the strobes are triggered by cable or radio slaves (I use Skyports (external link)), plugged into the PC sync, and the flash is on the hotshoe. I use manual radio slaves together with ETTL on-camera for weddings as fill.

The reason this isn't really recommended is with studio lighting you use large light sources for a soft light. Add in an on-camera speedlite and you have a small light which will create hard shadows, and maybe side shadow. If you have it on FEC-2 for a bit of fill you might be ok, otherwise you're defeating the purpose of studio lighting.

I would use a radio trigger like the PW to fire the 580 in manual mode as a hair light, the 580 in turn will fire the AB's optical slave sensors.

I have the LG4X and love it. To be able to fine tune the Bees on a fly is fantastic.
