So I'm sitting here with my 240EG backpack opened and my EF 24-105L is peek'n out right at me with a sad face. It's a great lens, but ever since I bought the EF 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.8, it's barely put to use...BARELY!

The only time I ever use it is if I need that width from 24mm, and sometimes that 105mm minimum focusing distance that my 85mm can't provide...

I'm somewhat hesitant to sell it because I'm always thinking about that "one situation..." where my zoom will come in handy...Ya know photojournalism type stuff...I'm moving to Vancouver, Washington and I hear the scenery is beautiful...I would like to start adventuring out and taking some landscape pictures.

So if you were in my situation...Would you sell a barely used 24-105L and replace it with say a 17-40L, possibly 70-200L IS, 100mm f/2.8 of any other lens I forgot to mention? If you look at my flickr, it doesn't seem like my shots are in demand of a zoom. But moving to another environment may change that...My indecisiveness always gets the better of me. :p

EDIT: I may also add, I did shoot a wedding with the 24-105L and I found it too slow...I am a bokeh addict and I dig playing with DoF. Something the 24-70L may provide as well...I may look for studio photography jobs when I move too.

I live just across the river from Vancouver, and I wouldn't get rid of my 24-105. I think you might find it useful when you're out hiking in the great landscapes this region has to offer. Landscape doesn't always mean wide angle.

5D + 24-105L = awesome combo.
I would keep it.

That said, if you aren't using it at all, then that's about $900-$950 burning a hole in your bag.

You're right. Though I do dig some wide angle sometimes! And 24mm itself is pretty wide. One of my favorite things about the 24-105L is IS and weight.

I've briefly used the 24-105 / 5D combo, and more recently with a 1D / 24-105 and I think they're both great combos to use. You've caught prime fever, and probably shooting everything near wide open too!

You could go wider still to the 17-40, which you won't be disappointed with, and possibly look at a wider prime also, like the 35 1.4

Yeah, that's one thing that's getting to me...I'm not a fan of wasting money. It hurts my soul.

Haha, you're absolutely right! I do have prime fever and I do shoot wide open a lot! A habit I need to quit! I love the contrast of colors shooting wide open retains.:D

I understand.

I have a 24-105L as well and it is my "walkaround" lens, however I find myself taking whatever I think I need for the specific task at hand and often times that doesn't include the 24-105L, especially if it is something local.

If I am going on a trip or vacation, the the 24-105L almost always comes with me and gets used. It's just a convenient range to have in that type of situation.

It's one of those things where if you bring it, you never use it, and if you don't there will always be an occasion to use it!:(

Alright, you've talked me into keeping it. I just needed some reassurance. I think on my couple days drive from western Florida to Washington, my 24-105L will be put to use a lot on the road.

I would think so. It's a great lens to have on vacations.
I'll be going to D.C. again in October and I'll be bring my 24-105L for sure. I'm there for vacation, not for shooting...

I like the 24-105 for it's IS. It's just a pleasure to shoot with.

However, if you're not using it much replacing it with a 28/1.8 and a 100 macro might give you what you're looking for.

As much as I love the 24-105, it sounds like you might be wanting of a 24-70. You'll have a slightly better MFD and while I think the 24-105 offers pleasant bokeh, the 24-70 is much better with thinner DOF, plus it's a little faster, but it lacks the IS that I need on a general duty lens.
