I keep mine in all the time and have never had problems with them draining prematurely. I do power off the camera, though, when I put it in the bag.

yea im talking about using the battery tray as a holder since its saves space and keeps the tabs from breaking or cracking if pressure is put on it.

So, you just want to use the tray as a holder and not really power the camera with the AA batteries?

No, you won't have any issues with the AA batteries being in the holder. They don't make a closed circuit until the tray is actually in the grip so any draining that occurs with the batteries will be due to the batteries own internal leakage.

Or just chuck the tray away and buy 2-4 more BP-511 batteries from www.sterlingtek.com (external link) for about $10 each, and don't mess with low capacity batteries in a camera.

As I later discovered, he just wanted to use the tray for storing and organizing his AA batteries, which sounds like a good idea. :)

i already have to 2 extra batteries. i rather have the tray around just incase and it lets me store some eneloops once my 580 comes in.

With the contacts in the tray, there is still a chance it might came into contact with metal/liquid and will create a short circuit. If you want to store batteries, you might just want to consider a plastic battery holder like this one. Plus, the tray only holds 6 and your 580EXII will need either 4 or 8 so where will you keep the other two?

I don't think it will ever be a problem if you use the batteries occasionally. Just be careful of long term storage because batteries can leak and will destroy the contacts by eating away the copper coating forming a "green goo". I had a flash that I left the batteries in for probably several months and when I tried to use it again it would not work because the copper coating on the contacts was eaten away. I don't think that you were asking about long term storage but if you plan to put the tray away for awhile then be sure to take the batteries out.
