Nubble Point Lighthouse - Maine USA

Hi All,

This is my first post and would like your comments on the photograph. I used my Canon 40D with the Sigma 30mm F.14 lens. Shot was taken handheld after taking a short walk onto some rocks so I could compose the photo without getting any of the tourist in the shot.

I have taken many photos with the 40D and thousands with my older 20D but this is my first photograph that I trying to get comments on. Image was not touched up other than white balance, saturation, border (1st try with borders), and cropping in PS.

Someone was getting married on the opposite side of the point and it was an absolutely beautiful day out. Think it was a couple from New York as many of the cars were from there. Maybe they would like a copy of this shot?

Nice shot of one of my favorite lighthouses. There are many other good views there, but this one works really well. Put it on the wall.

I like the colors and composition very much. it's kind of small but the light house looks a bit soft to me. probably partly from being handheld . . . but, maybe also from the fairly wide aperture. Do you normally shoot landscapes with apertures in that range? or was that just a function of trying to keep the shutter speed up?

I thought it was somewhat soft as well. I'm not too convinced that the Sigma 30 is focusing properly; I tried various shutter speeds and apertures. I captured the photos in RAW so I could try the post-processing in Lightroom and CS2. If I remember correctly, I might have been lying down on the rocks so I could get closer to the water, which may have induced a slight shake when I captured the image. I should have closed the aperture some more, if only I brought my tripod.

Any recommendations on trying to sharpen the image? I will try to make it up to the Nubble again, next time with a tripod and trying different lenses as well.
