I'm playing around with manual mode and trying to understand histograms so the pic isn't very interesting but I wanted to know if you think it's exposed correctly.

Looks slightly overexposed to me. Some pping could bring it back...

exposure is not a science its subjective and can be used creatively ;)

I would also say its a little bit over exposed just because the grass in the background seems very bright.

Interesting. I was going off what the meter said was correct and how the histogram looked. Boy, I've got alot to learn!:)

The stick and foreground appear to be properly exposed, but the background looks a little bright. This would concur with if your exposure meter (I assume you're using your camera for this) is set to centre weighted.

Aha! Yep, center weighted! I was in manual mode and the is the automatic setting. Does anyone know if I can change that in manual? I've got the 300D and my owner's manuel doesn't say - it just describes the different metering modes.

I've a 400d and the metering mode is changeable in manual and automatic modes, so i should be the same on yours. to change it you press left on the direction pad, and then you get the 3 options.

The darkest parts -- spots on the trunk -- are black and the lightest parts are not blown out, yet it appears slightly overexposed. However, it appears to be tonally flat to me. Here it is with adjusted levels in PS Elements. The pink indicated spots are the new levels.

It depends on what your subject is. The most important part is to get your subject properly exposed. The foreground and/or background sometimes have to be sacrificed due to the limitations of dynamic range. Shoot something with an actual subject if you're trying to learn how to expose properly.
