Here is the story:

I use iView for catalogueing (trying LR2 ATM, but I still find it too slow on my G5).
I make a selection in iView, and add IPTC.

Selected files get moved into subdirectory "Selection".

Then I open the selected images from iVIew into LR2, which pops up the "import" dialog.
I import while leaving the file at their original location.

After editing, I convert the CR2 files to DNG files, which get moved into subdirectory "DNG".

Now I had to deliver some files (about 90) of a big shoot ahead of the rest.

I used my regular workflow, and converted to DNG as a last step.

When I later wanted to import all selected files (450, including the 90 or so I'd done before), LR2 did *not* see the 90 "done" CR2 files in the catalog, since I'd converted them to DNG already... Kinda silly IMHO.

So, I either had to manually delete the 90 CR2 files I'd done already, or convert all 450 images to DNG before importing, then copy all "processed" DNG files over the 450 total DNG's, then sync the folder content in LR . (I choose the second option).

Any way around this?

I am not at home right now so i can't look around for this but i remember reading just last night about LR2 where there is a check box in a dialog box where you convert to DNG to also have LR delete the RAWS after converting to DNG... but it's not the default, it's something you have to enable in the form. But i think it also might only be an option in LR2.

Yeah, but that's not what I'd want... I back up the CR2 files as well ;)

When doing something like this why not use a color tag to indicate the processed shots? Then you could simply sort the images via attribute and only convert the non-"90" shots.

I think the issue you are having is that most people don't keep a RAW and DNG in an active catalog (I don't). Instead my shots get converted on import and the original CR2s are backed up without any edits. Although LR should check for duplicates during conversion from within the program, not just upon import.

So simple... Now why didn't I think of that?
Thnx :)

Update: Even simpeler; Library filter "Text": type in "DNG" and presto ;)

Second question:

In my workflow, I create a master folder (for instance 080628_EHBO_Grindcore in the below screenshot)

In that folder are all images.
I then make a selection, which goes into "voorselectie" in that folder.
I import into LR, edit, and convert to DNG, which get moved into a folder "DNG" inside the "master" folder.

Now, when I look in LR, all I see are a bunch of folders, in seemingly random order, called "voorselectie" or "DNG".

Less then useless.

I can right-click and select "Add parent folder", but that only seems to work one folder at a time

I'd rather not have to right click a few hundred folders seperatly.
What I've got is in the top, what I'd want is in the bottom ;)

Anybody know a workaround?

Yup. I searched last night for "cr" to find images that had not been converted to DNG and it worked great.

You have the weirdest workflow René. ;)

When you import what folder do you select as your import folder? Or do you just Import from current location? If it is the latter, I am not sure why you would have a bunch of folders named the same.

I import at currect location.
I make the selection in iView (since I use that for cataloging anyway, and it's faster then LR2).
Then I select all, and right click to "open with LR2". Which gives me the import dialog.

Tested it to make sure:
Like this:

IMAGE: http://img.skitch.com/20080904-xd99w26a2u4hisunfrq2mq4142.jpg
Shows up in LR like this:
IMAGE: http://img.skitch.com/20080904-bpa2ne4xay8r7aw2tbft78rmku.jpg

(The folders above were (going upward) picked using LR, and the "master folder" contains an image allready in LR...)

I can then right click to go here:
IMAGE: http://img.skitch.com/20080904-j6qtm85aipi6qbuc6i8rc2uehq.jpg

Which gives me this:
IMAGE: http://img.skitch.com/20080904-rm8wu2w2mtwpcep1i33nruj1hq.jpg

If I don't do the last steps (right click), I get a sidebar looking like this:

IMAGE: http://img.skitch.com/20080904-g9fpsi16gqdxww1i7m9kn4m1gy.jpg

I've allready done the top few, but I don't fancy having to right click all others one by one, and do the same on the other external HDD...

Now I see the problem, but I have no idea how to fix it. I import to LR straight from the CF card, copying photos to a new location.
