Does the New 50D Means No New 5D at Photokina?

Hello All,

Like many I've been holding out (for quite a while now) for the new 5D. I was wandering you guys think about the 50D announcement, does that mean we are not gonna see the new 5D soon? Until Christmas? Until PMA 09? Or may Canon still release it as the big thing next month at Photokina?

Nick

The canon rumour mill hasn't slowed down one bit re;5D since the 50D's "official" status. I've still got my money on there being a 5DmkII at Photokina.

Remember when Canon announces a new product, it's pretty much ready to ship at that point. No MkII yet doesn't mean it won't be in stores in September.

Just means it hasn't been "leaked" (or obviously, announced) yet, that is, if it will...

It's still early. Time will tell.

I think we will see a 5DMKII at Photokina.

Maybe they announced the 50D early so the new 5D can have all the spotlight at Photokina?? It could make sense from a marketing standpoint since the full frame cameras are more geared toward enthusiasts, and Photokina is more of an ethusiast convention (I had never even heard of it until this forum).

That makes sense. Where the 50D is a "marginal update" (to be fair, it's way more than that) perhaps, the 5D2 will probably steal the show. Likely one of the most anticipated camera releases in recent memory.

If you were entering into photography then the 50D would be an amazing choice to start with. I recently went from a 30D to a 5D. And to be honest, if I only had the 30D then the 50 would be tempting. Not a jump-out-of-my-wallet tempting, but tempting.

Since I now primarily shoot with the 5D, it doesn't do much for me. I can see how it would be amazing for some shooters, but it doesn't fit where I am.

I really hope that we see a 5D, or new FF, replacement at photokina. Canon is really due. Now that the 50D is at 15/16MP, they will have to shoot higher than that with a FF camera. That will seriously encroach upon their 1D market, but then they may release a smokin' 1DMIIIn and a 1DsMIIIn in the near future as well.

Nah, they don't have to. Look at the Nikon line-up:

D3 - 12.1 MP
D700 - 12.1 MP
D300 - 12.3 MP
D90 - 12.3 MP

I think if they have plenty of space to place the new FF replacement at 15.1 - 21.1 MP without stepping on people's toes. I think it's FPS that would really make 1D owners mad.

I've been thinking quite a bit about this too.

I excepted the 50D to have been 12 MP in-line with the 450D as it has usually been the case in the past. But 15 MP!

This has lead me to 3 different possibilities:

1) There wasn't ever going to be a 5D Mk II (improbable - but did Canon expect Nikon to launch a FF when they did?), the 50D is the "new" 5D. Also improbable as the 5D has sold very well! Maybe they put it off for a while.

2) Canon are waiting again, because as pointed out earlier, Nikon don't come close to the 1Ds Mk III in terms of resolution. Canon waiting until the the 1Ds Mk IV is released so they can have 21MP without encrouching on 1Ds Mk III sales. The 50D being the "back-up" for the 1Ds seeing how it has a resolution close to the 1Ds Mk II and is the first release with Digic 4. However 5D's replaced after possibly 4-5 years in production? I doubt it.

3) Canon will release the 5D Mk II at Photokina(or in the near future as to trial the Digic 4 in the 50D), Digic 4 being trialled in the 50D. Also not to steal the 50D's limelight too much.

I hope it's a case of option 3! I love my 5D but it I feel will start lagging behind from now on. It's 3 years old and that is along time in DSLR world...

After the 50D announcement, I decided (in my head) there will be no 5D Mark II. It was just some nasty rumor some evil person made up to get all us FF wannabees salivating.

I figure if I remain in a perpetual state of disbelief, it will be all the more exciting if it does happen. Then if it doesn't manifest, I won't be too upset either. ;)

I got tired of waiting on Canon's next FF model, so I went back to the original...

Film.

Film? OK, so....does that use CF or SD cards? ;)

I just saw a guy toting a 16-35mm lens on a very well used EOS 1 body (a lot of the black paint had been worn off of the body) and a 400 5.6 and 70-200. Smart guy brought that on as carry-on baggage.

I was hoping for the successor to the 5D to be announced in August and available for purchase in September because I wanted to bring a FF body along with my 40D to an upcoming trip to Japan in the last two weeks of October. Needless to say, the announcement of the 50D gave me a scare, but I want to believe that there is still a slight chance for a "5D MkII" to be unveiled at Photokina, so I am crossing my fingers!
