As this thread has taken on a life of its own, I'll do my best to post useful links here so people don't have to dig through the entire thread to find them.

Please do not PM me with questions on Alamy. I will no longer be responding to PM's regarding anything to do with Alamy.
Most questions have already been answered multiple times in this thread.
Almost all questions can be answered in Alamy's Contributor Information.
If you have questions, before you go and ask, you need to read what's already there.
If you can't find your answers, then by all means ask in the thread. Or better yet, ask it in the Alamy forum.
If you send me a PM about Alamy, I will assume it wasn't important enough for you to read up on your own, and as such will not important enough for me to respond to

http://www.thephotographybiz.com/ (external link) - A blog that contains a great deal of info on stock photography, including an excellent description of Alamy licensing options and image criteria for QC.

http://www.alamy.com/forums/ (external link) - Alamy's official contributer forum

Direct from Alamy:
Official Contributer Agrement (external link)
Preparing Images (external link)
Sending Images (external link)

Yep, all that great stuff, most of it right there on the Alamy website. Please read up there before asking silly questions here.

If there was ever a moment that solidified whether to play with macro or micro for me, it was when I did the math for how much I was missing out on in profit if my images on micro were being paid at the rate for macro.

As opposed to the hundreds of sales with my microstocks that only gave maybe a few hundred dollars, my Alamy account just registered two sales this month for a total of over $500, bringing my five sale total to just under $1000.. and I'll be seeing roughly $600 of that. OH SNAP!

Five sales, paying $600...
vs hundreds of sales, paying maybe $200

Looks like I'll be more proactive with my Alamy account from now on =)

What license did you select for those images that sold?

How are you guys getting 50 meg jpegs? I must be misunderstanding what they want but I can't get the file sizes to the level they want.

heck a 58 meg tiff (and that''s brining it into adobe from RAW at 400 dpi and 16bit) turns into a 8 meg jpeg.

you upsize it in adobe photoshop (same steps as reducing the images, add pixels not take away)

Ok, yeah, I upsized it to 400 dpi from the RAW converter but that yielded a 24 meg 8 bit tiff (57 meg 16bit tiff). Guess I'll play around, maybe have to up it to 800 dpi and maybe increase the canvas size in Raw converter. lol.

Here's how you do it:

-Convert RAW file to TIFF
-Open up in Photoshop
-Go to Image/Mode/ and select 16 bit
-Go to Image/Image Size, set the width to 5128 and under "resample image" make sure you have Bicubic Smoother selected
-After the image is resized, go to Image/Mode and select 8 bit
-Go to File/Save and save it as a JPEG file at level 12, and you're good to go

gary88 - congrats on being accepted

adblink - congrats to you as well. don't skimp out on keywording, it's the only way to get your images noticed. All of the sales I've had have been for RM. I think I have like five shots that are RF.

thebishopp - gary88's advice on upsizing is actually the exact same upsizing process I use for mine.

how do you decide what license you should be using? i believe there are 2 different types of RF licenses?

A lot of really helpful info can be found by simply reading their FAQ for contributors.
http://www.alamy.com/contributors/default.asp (external link)
Most of the time, I usually forget it's even there, so waste time searching for an answer that would've taken seconds to look up. Even if you don't have a specific question, it's worth browsing through.. could make your experience w/ Alamy much more pleasant.

Here's a direct link to the little tidbit on licensing.
http://www.alamy.com/licensing.asp (external link) It's an excellent read if you have any question of how their licensing setup works.

As per their chart, the difference is in three areas:
1. Cost
2. Exclusivity
3. Permission

As far as me? I choose RM because a great deal of what I shoot is editorial. Editorial requires releases to be used as RF, and I'd hate to lose out on sales because of an exclusivity agreement if I ever capture something that incredible, so I stick with RM. The only images I have listed as RF are that way because I had them as RF with other sites before Alamy. Even shots I could use as RF are licensed RM when I submit now. I guess it's also a different market in a way.

Why dont you start recording YOUR OWN action while doing this
-Convert RAW file to TIFF
-Open up in Photoshop
-Go to Image/Mode/ and select 16 bit
-Go to Image/Image Size, set the width to 5128 and under "resample image" make sure you have Bicubic Smoother selected
-After the image is resized, go to Image/Mode and select 8 bit
-Go to File/Save and save it as a JPEG file at level 12,

Then click stop. It will take you 20 seconds.
