I'll just share my one experience with sending L glass in:

Lens: 17-40L
Warranty: Yes. Enclosed a COPY of the warranty card and the receipt/online order.
Problem: Just wanted it cleaned/inspected before a vacation.
What they did: Cleaned the lens thoroughly, tweaked the calibration.
Price:$0, but I live near Canon so I didn't even pay for shipping.
Result: 17-40L better than ever!

Fill the warranty card out, then make a copy of it.

maybe a better question is....everyone makes a blank warranty card sound very important in their for sale threads...

I have wondered this myself. If it is past a year, it is like a certificate of ownership for a cabbage patch doll..........worthless IMO.

Nikon D300 and other non canon stuff, I just like this place. MOOOHAHAHAHA :p

They shouldn't, as said its essentially meaningless without the receipt.

On top of that Canon's policy is that warranties are non-transferable. Now, if you have the original receipt chances are they won't contest it, but they can.

You don't have to send in your warranty card. I sent my 70-200 f/4L in a couple weeks ago and all I had to provide was a copy of the original purchase receipt & the print out that Canon requires once you file a service claim. If you file the claim online it'll ask for the serial number off the lens and automatically decide if it's within warranty or not. To top it off the original receipt was not even in my name. It was the receipt provided by the person I bought it from off of here.

That automatic decision is based on the purchase date you entered, not the S/N. Everything else is correct. Just a copy of the receipt, which should have the same purchase date you claimed.

File claim, print, pack, ship, and wait. Takes NJ about 3 days after they receive your lens to log it. At that point you start getting e-mails on the status.

Just sent in my 1d. Online form said it was out of warranty, but once Canon received it, they confirmed it was still covered.

ok, so under warranty, it seems that they fix pretty much anything.

Not caused by a fall, water damage......

the Irvine, CA service facility seemed a bit slow to me. Took roughly 3 weeks total.

What's funny is I was under the impression that my purchase date decided my warranty but when I called Canon the service rep just asked me for the serial number. Although I still decided to do the claim online after calling.

i have never sent in a Lens to canon, but for those of you that have, can you please explain the process for

sending w/ a warranty

sending w/o a warranty

lets say you just want to see if the lens is out of whack, do they have a set price to just take the lens apart?

obviously, if something is broken and needs to be replaced they will have to charge for parts, if warranty is expired.

do they cover accidental damage?

lets say i drop my lens, brand new, and something breaks inside, do i pay anything?

and just so it is clear, all my lenses are in great shape, i am just curious.

i see everyone has a blank warranty card in the for sale section...will canon not honor the warranty if that card is not sent in?

i never fill those out, with other electronics, and i have never had any issues getting things fixed under warranty.

why not call canon? they've got an 800 number and they won't put you on hold :D.

Probably if your gear is registered, they'll have the purchase date. Most of mine isn't. In any event, they won't believe you without a copy of the receipt, and the warranty card serves no purpose :)

NJ is about the same. Everything I've had repaired takes 2-3 weekends to get back. I usually ship 2nd day air, then it takes Canon 2-3 days to record its existence. Then another 5+ days to actually begin the work. My experience is limited to about 6 repairs.

I have registered all my gear over the net. Not one card filled out, and I have them all.
If I sell it on ebay with the warranty card(not filled out) Cannon still know that I registered it and it want be good for anyone else right. I would think that I could send in my lens with out the card because they have it on file.
