Congrats, I just got my 3541LS and M20 delivered a few hours ago and I can't believe how rock solid and light this set up is. Never before could I ever imagine spending that much for support but that 500L keeps calling my name so I figured I'd try and future proof myself best I could.

Now if I could just figure out a way to start getting paid to do this to help offset the cost.

Damn nice!! I just got my legs 2 hours ago ;) Ill post a shot of it with my crappy old 3-way pan head on it...I might just use my old one until the ballhead/L-Plate come :D

It's very difficult to get to critical sharpness handheld.

True that! and critical sharpness at F11/F13 ;)

DAMN! Can I be your friend?!

Well I'm 6' flat so the manfrotto puts the 40D right at my eye level with the column extended fully, and most of the time I wish to go a lot higher than that...

It will also be extremely helpful on cliffs and steep hills ;)

Plus its 59' with only three legs extended ;)

cheers ed

i can see where longer legs would be useful on uneven terrain where you'd want to move the legs out so your camera doesn't topple over.

i must really like my "friend". i buy him a gitzo and me a benro :D!

Ohhh! I see what you mean now (3 sections extended out of four). I thought it had four legs or something and cost more because there was extra CF in it.

This means what? Shall I break it down for you

There are other models - Cheaper models...
- Most of them (gitzos) max out at 57-58-59 inches three OR four legs...
- I have those tripods - and if I need to I have 20 more inches in length on any of the three legs I choose (or maybe all three!)

Psht

No problem. The confusion was where you used the word "leg" instead of "section". If you'd have said "It is 59" high with only 3 sections extended" it would have made perfect sense. You used the word leg instead of section so I actually believed you meant "leg" and was wondering what a tripod (tri-leg) looked like with four legs. It's impressive indeed that it's 59" with only 3 sections extended. That part became quite clear by your picture above.

More than that, The uneven terrains makes any tripod seem shorter. I've found that for sizing a tripod, you want the tripod and ballhead combined height to be such that you have to stretch to look through the VF when on a flat floor (maybe an inch or two longer than you would want on a floor). That makes it work perfectly outdoors. Just an inch dip in the ground eats up tripod height.

MAN +1!

The amount of times 'I know' I have to push my tripod into the ground for stability is not countable on my hands and feet :) you loose a lot more than an inch most of the time

Ps I was thinking a Markins M10 + RRS BS II Quick release (or w.e ;))
just curious why you are selling your RRS BH40?

I have an M-10 on my 3541LS -- the "right" Markins head is the M-20 but the M-10 works fine. The tripod's base is a bit bigger than the base of the head but there is no issue. You save a bit of weight by going with the M-10 over the M-20 and currently you don't have any lenses that need the bigger head.

My plan was that if I never need more capacity on the head, it is easy to sell the Markins and move up but for now I'm saving some weight.

I've been very happy with my 1257 with a Markins M10 but some time in the future I'm sure I'll look in to a 3 series like that (A friend of mine just got one).
