I have an M-10 on my 3541LS -- the "right" Markins head is the M-20 but the M-10 works fine. The tripod's base is a bit bigger than the base of the head but there is no issue. You save a bit of weight by going with the M-10 over the M-20 and currently you don't have any lenses that need the bigger head.

My plan was that if I never need more capacity on the head, it is easy to sell the Markins and move up but for now I'm saving some weight.

Thanks...I actually just asked the question about the head being a smaller diameter than the tripod base in another thread ;)

I was thinking about the M20 but I would like to save weight even if its like .25 lbs or w.e...

Also like you said none of my lens currently 'require' me to carry the extra heavy ballhead so Ill stick with the M10

Thanks again Hoff

MAN +1!

The amount of times 'I know' I have to push my tripod into the ground for stability is not countable on my hands and feet :) you loose a lot more than an inch most of the time

Ps I was thinking a Markins M10 + RRS BS II Quick release (or w.e ;))
just curious why you are selling your RRS BH40?

The best choice for the 3541 is the M20 not the M10. The M10 is aimed at Series 2 tripods. The M20 fits the 3541 better.

I'm selling the BH40 because i want to get a Q3. It's smaller and lighter and its for my travel tripod. Also, I'd like the controls to be similar to my M20. 'sides that, I like the Markins stuff better.

Yeah Hoff posted shots of the M10 in another thread I have going on a similar subject...It does look a little out of place but Hoff said with the camera mounted it looks completely fine :)

I won't be getting the M20 just because it fits...My needs only require the M10 and I do A LOT of hiking and any weight saved is appreciated by my shoulders ;)

I've been very happy with my 1257 with a Markins M10 but some time in the future I'm sure I'll look in to a 3 series like that (A friend of mine just got one).

I have a BH40 on a 1258 - very similar. My plan is to update that with a Q3 and sell the BH40. I also have a 3540LS with an M20. Very impressive setup. I think I should really sell the 1258 setup and go for a lighter weight one (1540+Q3) for travel. The 3540LS w/M20 is only 5.0 lbs compared to the 4.1 of the 1258/BH40 but it will damp 2X the vibration amplitude the 1258 will - that's a big difference and the 1258 is no slouch.

She is beautiful! I've grown to love my RRS BH-55 but, I do want to get a lightweight travel set up as well.

Congrats on the head.

I'm still amazed how tight it locks down with the slightest turn of the knob.

Do you have to turn the pan knob pretty tight in order to fully lock it up

I find if I turn the pan knob as tight as I can get it I'm still able to force it to pan(albeit ever so slightly). Although I find myself almost never locking down the pan knob, usually I leave it pretty lose and firm up the main knob a touch and loosen the tripod collar when I'm after BIF.

Last time I was out I was sitting on a rock outcrop with the legs all splayed out at wonky angles so I did the above to keep the BG straight.

Lol thanks, but it's not me. It's Malcolm McDowell from a screen shot of A Clockwork Orange.
