If you're going wide for landscapes on a 40D, then I'd definitely say the 10-22.

17-40 on a full frame is amazing, not sure about a crop though. Haven't got to give it a full test run yet since i just sold all my crop gear and moved full frame but from what i can tell its a keeper

SIgma 10-20 or Canon EFs 10-22.
I recommend first though personally have the second one.
Reason: Will work on 1D 5D also unlike canon's EFs that gets really at time frustrating. I would prefer to have the vignette and be able to use the lens rather than getting unable to hook it up. Yes I have heard about the hacking but not sure how it damages the lens.

If it's between those two, I'd definitely say go for the 10-22. I had a 17-40 on my old XTi and it just wasn't wide enough with the crop.

I second (or third) the suggestion of getting the Sigma 10-20. It was amazing on my XTi and I'm sure it's going to blow me away once I stick it on my new 40D too. I love the ultra wide angle. Great for tight spaces and for landscapes.

Sigma 10-20 is a fun lens. i have one on my 40D so i would say its out of canon 10-22 or the sig.

Great lenses.

You get hood and case with the sig and its a fair bit cheaper. Some would say that they prefer the sig.

I use a 17-40L on my 40D as a landscape lens and love it. For me it's plenty wide enough and can also be used as a walkaround. The image quality is fabulous!

Sigma 10-20 = potential QC issues, bad color cast

I'd suggest the Canon 10-22 or Tokina 11-16.

wow, no tokina lovers here.

... which is weird because I keep reading how users of the 11-16 and 12-24 love them so much and how the lens offer such stunning and luminous IQ! Maybe the Tokina lovers are all on a final Summer vacation... ;)
(Mine won't be here til next week... boo!)

I had a Tokina 12-24, it took incredible pictures and was around $225 less the the canon. I still regret getting rid of it. :(

Ditto.

That was nice glass.
