There's a lot of talk about the new 50D and it's release in Oct is much awaited now :) There are threads with comparisons to 40D but can anyone throw light on how the 50D might stack up against the 30D or 20D ?

I currently use a 400D (Rebel XTi) and was considering 40D as one of the possible options until 50D came out. Now, I'm thinking of the 20D or the 30D as well.

Cheers,
Girish

To be honest, it is all going to be opinions. Looking at specs, its going to win hands down.

Without a product being on the market, it will be difficult to really say by how far, it will outperform other models.

I upgraded from 20D to 40D and it was a nice improvement in some areas...

AF, faster and more accurate and the most important difference for me
Highlight prio, I have a lot of use for that feature
High ISO low light IQ, visibly improved

It was worth the upgrade and the 50D will be another big step ahead.

Going to the 20/30D will not be much of an improvement to you 400D

The 20D and 30D will be (comparatively) obsolete as of the 50D's release. You can downsample the 50D and get almost the same resolution (7.1 megapixels) with virtually everything else improved, plus 2 stops higher max ISO.

I owned an XT, XTi (briefly) and own a 20D and 40D. I liked the XTi fine, it wasn't significantly inferior to the 20D and in some ways the 20D is a downgrade. The 40D is the only worthwhile consideration in the currently available xxD series, but if just moving up a bit from an XTi I might consider an XSi instead.

If I wanted a really significant upgrade, I'd wait for the 50D. It's really significant, in many ways.

I think 20 and 30D's will be great options used for those looking for a good deal on a DSLR either starting out or as a second body. They should be in the $400-600 range and for that kind of money they'd be a good choice against a basic intro model. I wouldn't compare them directly to a 50D but we should all remember that these cameras are capable of taking better images than many of us ever will and that most very rarely need the extra megapixels.

I'm sure the 50D will be great, but people need to remember the older gen xxd camera's still take great photos.

I love my 30d, in fact I was shooting yesterday with it and just thought- I really do l like this body. I'm sure I'd love a 50D, but once stepping outside of the latest and greatest hype, the older generation bodies hold their own well.

The 30D/40D are completely eclipsed by the 50D on paper. If it performs well in the real world, the only reason not to move from your 400D to a 50D would be price. I still get great results from my 20D and L glass. Though I'm looking hard at selling my 5D and buying a 50D.

My 30D takes pictures as well as my 1DMKIIN and MKIII in most situations, it is just cropped.

Is there a difference in AF, ISO performance etc? Sure, but the 30D is no slouch, and certainly not obsolete yet.

From an XTi, if you're considering a 30D that's a nice change. Remember, the 20D is just about identical to the 30D, so on a budget that's a realistic choice.

So its less than a year and the 40D is going to be dated :(

Technology just moves so fast, Canon are like premier football clubs always changing kits to get more money out the fans.....

Im happy with my 40D, infact Im still learning more about it each time I use it now Ive got the Canon 40D guide, great book ;)

I´m in the same situation upgrade my XTI to a 30D. I´m just do photography as a hobby. Take family photos and landscapes. By the end of this year the 40D comes down in price i maybe looking to upgrade to it. The 50D is way out of my price range.

THE LATEST model is only good if you need those specific features that you found desiring in the earlier models. Regardless of the models, they ALL take good pictures, so again it's the specific upgraded features that one needs to look at and see whether the upgrade is a good choice or not. Having said that, I'd trade my 20D + 40D for the 50D (if what's on the paper turns out to be good in practice in the field). In other words, there's no comparison -- but that's just me.

I don't see what the worry is. With each new advanced camera body, Canon is improving their DSLR line. This pushes the price of older bodies down. I still have my 4 year old Canon 20D which is my workhorse. Still takes excellent photos. The AF is superior to my Pentax K10D, and is more then enough to get excellent BIFs. 8 mega pixels is more then enough to make very nice looking 13x19" prints.

I can remember a time when many photographers would buy one film camera and then have it for decades with no worry that their image quality would decrease, or the next new thing would improve their photography to new heights. People seem to get caught up in the need to always buy the latest and greatest.

I myself stood off of the 30D and 40D. I figure every camera body I buy should last me at least two generations. The 50D seems like a nice upgrade for me at the moment.

I think people just get caught up with having the latest and greatest just because. :)
