I'm trying to get a bunch of slides/film scanned and I don't want to spend a ton of money on this. I don't need a ton of resolution because I have the originals if I need them, but if I could print from the digital files that would be nice.

I'm looking at this scanner:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …n_4490_Photo_Flatbed.html (external link)

It's listed as 4800 dpi. So what would the resulting file be from a 35mm film scan? I know a 35mm frame is 36mm x 24mm, so would that be:

36mm = 1.417" * 4800 = 6,801px wide
24mm = 0.945" * 4800 = 4,536px tall
6801 x 4536 = 30.85mp

Is that right? That seems way to high.

I haven't seen on with a 4800 optical resolution that's pretty impressive, but useless. At that resolution nothing would look good, and you would end up with all sorts of wacky ghosts and images on your photos.

9600 is usually interpolated, so ignore that. The DPI is pretty meaningless if you buying a scanner made in the last 3-4 years. 2400+ is more than enough for almost any job.

What you want is "ICE" which is the dirt and scratch remover built into the scanner which this scanner has. (NOT Software ICE, you want it in the Hardware)

For the price I think it's a good scanner. I have the HP version of this same scanner and paid more for. Good find.
