I personally had never had anybody weigh my carry-on on the many flights I've been on, until this summer. Then it happened on two of 4 flights this summer. One from munich to Johannesburg via Madrid and another from Gothenburg to Munich. The odd part is these were both round trips but were only checked in one direction.

According to TSA website, (tripods and monopods not specfically mentioned) pool cues and golf clubs must be checked (fatal poke in the eye with the pool cue?!?!? beware of terrorists with pool cues )

I have this bag and it holds my camera and every one of my lenses, plus my flash, battery charger, and light meter. It's huge - relatively speaking. It fits all airline carry on requirements at this time.

This bag is outstanding for international travel.
But then I've switched from every LowePro and Tamrac bag/accessories to totally ThankTank and never regretted the move.

Lotsa stuff, running outta room and a wife...I keep looking at her and wondering???

any carries on pelican 1510+ backpack?

I carry a Pelican 1514 with a backpack all the time.

My backpack can be a North Face Surge for general use, Mountainsmith Parallax for dedicated camera gear, and at times the LowePro Stealth backpack (now discontinued, and mine needs to be repaired or replaced) for a combo of clothes, basic gear and laptop.

My Pelican 1514 + Backpack has been used for around 100,000+ miles of flying for specific jobs over the past 2 (2.5?) years , traveling through at least five countries I can think of (excluding the US and Canada).

Tripods are most certainly allowed as carry-on when flying within the United States, and for international travel to and from most countries. Your tripod may be counted as a 'carry-on' item should it cause your bag to exceed the maximum carry-on size allowances set forth by your airline.

Tripods must conform to airline specified carry-on requirements. It is best to remove the head and pack that in your carry on, bringing only the legs through security separately.

The allowance for a tripod is not up to the security inspector. The allowance of a tripod is specifically allowed by the TSA in the United States.

I fly with my tripod on the exterior of my bag depending on the job, and fly with one or two Manfrotto 3373 compact light stands attached to the exterior of my backpack of a consistent basis. In one trip earlier this year in the span of 3.5 days I passed through security in Providence, Philadelphia, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Incheon, Tokyo and Chicago with a Manfrotto 3373 light stand attached to a North Face Surge backpack and no one blinked twice at any security check point at the airport (they did remove and inspect my Pocket Wizards (external link) in Incheon and Chicago though (at least I think those were the two airports that checked them out).

I address the subject of flying with a tripod exterior to my bag at www.flyingwithfish.com (external link) if you search "tripod" or "Manfrotto 3373"

Happy Flying

On my last trip...

On my last trip between LAX and Anchorage on Alaska Airlines, I carried onboard a fully loaded Lowepro Vertex 300 backpack. That was within the size limitations but, they never weighed the bag. It was PRETTY DARN HEAVY and might have been above the restrictions....

It seems strange but, I was charged an extra $25 for my checked on bag because it was above the 50# weight restriction but, was not charged for it on my way home - and it was even heavier than.

Also, I asked the security guard at the luggage search if I could carry my monopod onboars or if I would have to check it. In LAX I was told that it was a "clublike" weapon and I couldn't carry it aboard. At Anchorage, I was told "Sure, people carry these onboard every day!"

I am not sure that there is total standardization of rules or enforcement of rules.

RP,

A monopod is considered 'photographic equipment' and allowed. They say 'no' you ask or a Sup'v.

I'm intent on buying one of 1514s for travel to Japan next month,

Have your carry on's been weighted by airport customers?

I mean an 1514 with camera gears might be pretty heavy,

normally, it's 7kg or 16lbs allowed by each carry on.

so, my concern is will that exceed the carry on package limits or have you got truoble with carrying it?

I have heard about that janpanese customer officers are very picky.....
