Looking for advice on how to get the most number of "flashes" from the 580ex II when used on the mark3 at high burst rate.

1) Camera Settings
2) Recommended external battery pack

Crank your ISO up as high as it will go and your f-stop as low as it will go. Use the flash in manual at the lowest setting necessary for the desired effect, down to 1/128.

I don't use an external battery but if I did I'd look at www.aljacobs.com (external link). His units will give you more flashes per charge but do not necessarily increase the burst rate. For that I believe you will need a high power external battery attachment such as the Canon or Quantum(?) units.

What poster above said...but I think he meant open up your lens all the way. Also look for a Quantum turbo if you want to burn out your flash :)

A second note, you must be rich to be able to afford the MKIII and ask this question, no offense intended, I know quite a few people who are scared of flash.

But but... Dave, @ iso3200 and f1.2, we need a flash to suck up light instead of providing more :)

Back to ramo, playing with rapid flash at 10 fps is a dangerous game, unless you have few spare 580IIs.

And at ISO 12800 on the new 50D we will be sharing all the extra light with the other photographers.

It sure would optimize the flash use though.

You say potatoe I say potato.....

F-stop as low as it goes is the same as opening up your lens all the way.

Get a CP-E4 battery pack (external link), it generally cuts cycle times by 2/3.
