Alright so I have been able to get the cactus trigger to work great with my Canon 430EX. I want to try some more fun.

I will order another receiver so I don't see that being a problem. My question is this. Is there an aftermarket brand that I can manually play with that will be set off with the cactus trigger that are 250 dollars like the 430EX? I would like to get 2 flashes of the same type and have them to use with the off camera flash.

Is this at all possible? Suggestions? I can eventually upgrade to have a pair of 580ex but not right now.

Sunpak 383 or Vivitars (both under $100 each) seem to be the flash of choice around here. I use an old Sunpak 555. Virtually any flash that has a manual mode and preferably power adjustments can be used off camera in your situation. It may be a challenge getting them triggered but they should work.

Beyond that it just depends on how much power, adjustment, etc you want to pay for.

Get the Vivitar 285 or 285Hv or both for less than 200.

Thanks guys :)

Anyone know of the ebay/cactus trigger? Should just fire it using 'full manual'?

It appears the sunpak model is harder to come by.

Would any of their newer models also work for my needs?

There is what you are looking for sir. I can send bring a few down in 2 weeks for us to play with. Melinda had 2 sitting on the counter when I got home from the last trip to ATL. She got them at a garage sale for $20 with 2 EOS film bodies, and FD body and a few random lenses.

I would not invest in the cactus triggers. I got them to work with a 430 ex and a Sunpak 355. It is really not worth the trouble..

I'm waiting for next on-call schedule to come out before I know if I can leave town that weekend. But If I come down I'll bring some new toys for sure.

You just said you got them to work, it was to much trouble? ?!

Anyway, for the money they do a great job for any amateur starting on wireless flash, need to find myself one of the above flashes mentioned as well!

The least expensive off-camera flash triggers - and often the easiest ones to use - are optical "slave" sensors or sync cables.

I use a sunpak 555 and a 622 super for portable lighting. I converted pc connector to work with an ebay type wireless trigger and they work great. (most of the time)
