Time For *. Where *= prints, cds or other media. Common business practice for new photographers and new models...instead of charging each other...they work out a block of time modeling and shooting that benefits both parties.

FP isn't killing anything. It is mainly used by ams taking a stab at photography and hobbyist. They aren't stealing business from anyone. The models and companies who go to photographers for TFP are of the same caliber. Ones who don't have the money/ or would rather go without than spending it. Like the saying goes... you get what you pay for...

If a photographer is that confident with their talents and skills they aren't going to stuff an ammeter model who wont bring anything to the photo in their shoot just because she is free. They would rather have someone who has actual talent and experience that can bring their good photographic skill to pop to the next level.

You can be a great photographer but with a lousy MUA, Stylist, & Model your pick up for TFP you photos wont go to that next level. And vise-versa you can be a great Model, Stylist, MUA but with a lousy photographer your not going to be able to show that as well as with one who has experience.

TFP all you want. It is a great place to get practice, and work out details and other aspects of your equipment and technique... Not so much for when you want some portfolio shots, or something you intend to be public printed or used in adverts

To be honest I think those complaining about TFP is just an excuse to fall back on for why you aren't busting your ass to find business.

That one ikea girl is such a laugh "TFP, in my own words is like time for prints" yes sweetie, because time for pints is completely your own words, all the photographers I know use the acronym TFP for meaning Totally Free Photography. And come on, that story at the end LOL.

TFP is alive and well at all levels of photography, not just he amateurs. Top level photographer still do FTP with top level models. The difference is they call it testing, and not TFP. But the principal is the same.

testing, practice, TFP whatever you want to call it.

I'm simply making a point directed to the OP which is drawing the conclusion that the amateur/hobbyist end of TFP is "killing the industry" and stealing work from pros. Which is a joke. The people using that level of TFP isn't a marketable area to be making a living off of. Yea, you may miss one small job on occasion to that. But nothing that is causing these claims that photographers are struggling because of this meager loss of flighty business. The whole notion is absurd IMO  . You want more business go pound the pavement and work your butt off for it.

I'm not hating on anyone. There is that level that photographers get to where they decide weather they want to be a hobbyist or make a living out of photography. Of those who want to make a living out of it decide if they want to work for it or sit by and hope that a lucrative photography career will just land in their lap and they will become successful. The latter of the two that find that nothing is happening for them business wise is where excuses like this come from.

Once again just my opinion, take it for what you will.

So after searching threads and stuff...it's normal for the TFP in CD form to have 5-10 photos on them? If so, does that mean you just shoot as much as you can, then pick the absolute best ones and that's it? I'm a total newb at this and am saving up for a strobe before bothering my friends to be my test subjects.

You probably ought to work that out with the person you're doing it with... some people may want everything.

i agree with most here that its not going to affect the industry nor should you be worried about it.

Only people who should worry about this are those who have bad work and are charging prices. if your work is worth it, people will pay.

There are no rules for a good photograph and there are no excuses for a bad one.
