I will be able to buy a 1D mark III in two weeks. Would you suggest just getting the 1d Mark III or wait to see if they make an N? I have been waiting quite a while for this upgrade. I am doing 6 shoots a week, and this would camera would be a godsend to have over the rebel xt.

What would you do? Buy now, or wait?

Unless it's really gonna kill you, this close to a major photo expo, I'd at least wait and see what comes of it.

Any additional releases (beyond the 50D) may not be earth shattering which would then nearly make your decision for you. However, if Canon really pulls a major rabbit out of the hat...

Even if something happens at Photokina, you're not going to see if for another four months or longer. If you can buy in two weeks make sure the place has a 30day return policy.

if you want something bigger, but dont want to dump a huge amount of money, you could try a 40d for a few months, see how you like it. I stopped using my xti once i got my 30d, mostly due to size. My hands fit the 30d better. However, I just bought a 1dmkii and I think my 30d will be sitting around once i get my mkii. I would imagine you would enjoy the 40d much more than the xt. but that's my 2 pennies.

Plus, even if there was an N, imagine the queue for it, what with all the already Mark III owners trading in.....possibly.

They would probably hold out on a mkiii replacement for a while, perhaps a year longer so they have a new thing for winter olympics not only out, but on market long enough to make sure nothing crops up. It'll likely be a 5d successor to come out, but anything is possible. If no mkiii replacement is called a week before photokina, chances are that's the lowest mkiii prices will be for at least a few more months.

if it was movie mode and 100% viewfinder coverage, then i'm sold on it. (ref. 5D Mark II)

although a new 1D with dual DIGIC IV processors would be absolutely incredible...

I have had a rule. "Wait 6 months then buy"

This allows
issues to be sorted- if any
other peoples reviews who own it
and time to justify the upgrade/replacement
price to drop

So far it has worked for 20D, 30D,5D and 1Dsmk3
Never had a single issue

Canon generally doesn't replace their pro bodies that quickly... but then again, they also broke the 18-month rule for the XXD bodies... hmmmmm

I would think by now all the mark III issues have been sorted out. It's been over a year.

Honestly, I would avoid the mk3 right now. If a new one comes out at photokina, then you'll take a huge depreciation hit right away, and probably regret the decision. Even worse, it will always have a stigma - which will kill your resale value as well.

If you really HAVE to get a new camera now, then look into a 1dm2 for half the money. If a new mk3n comes out, you'll probably still be able to resell it for a minimal loss (it's already taken most of its depreciation). Even better, it's a great camera that is RELIABLE to the core. It's only sin is the smaller lcd
