50D was announced by Canon this week. It won't be here until, October.

October is only 5 weeks away. ;)

With the new Digic IV and hi-res LCDs released, I can expect the top models to get revamped really soon.

That being said, the gossip was that Canon was planning to announce 3 new dSLRs... the 50D is obviously one...

Canon 40D 10-22mm 24-105L 580 EX II
Canon IIIA LTM Serenar 28mm 3.5
Serenar 50mm 1.8
Leica IIIf RD ST LTM Elmar 50mm 3.5
Nikkor 50mm 1.4
Kodak Brownie No 2

Yes, but more likely to see it at the end of October, so more like 2 months from announced date.

Thank you guys for all of your insight. It has made it even more difficult to decide what I want to do. There is a good chance that I will go with the 1d mark III. I am sure it is an excellent camera. I had considered just getting a 5D now, but then they rose in price $600 from last month. I am sorry, but I am not paying $600 more for something that old, no matter how good it is.

bugger buying any new camera- I just looked at your website- you're doing just fine with what you got!

If oyu were going to upgrade, wouldn't a 5D be better for you?

Thanks for the compliment. I have been doing just fine thus far with the rebel xt, but it is time to move up. I have reached its limitations for the type of shots I want to get. The image quality is acceptable from the rebel, but it is not fantastic.

Some major issues with the rebel for me are:
It is too small

Image quality is OK, not great

High ISO performance is crap

Viewfinder is way way way too small. I wear glasses, and many times I have to take them off to look through the viewfinder, and I can barely make out people expressions in composition when framing. It is in focus, but it is too small.

The LCD is tiny, although I can zoom in to see if the image is sharp

It is overall an awkward camera with big lenses. I have it gripped, but I have big hands, it is just not enough.

Oh yeah, and I am serious about photography, this is no hobby, this is going to be a life long career for me.

So, it is time for an upgrade.
