OK, here's the dilemma. My wife does wedding photography on the side for friends and family. I come along as an assistant when she needs help. We currently have a 5D with the 24-70L and 70-200L 2.8IS. We just got a 30D for a second body. Now we've been deciding on getting an ultra wide angle lens. I was leaning toward the 17-40L but if we use it on the 30D, the FL will be 27-64. Now if we get the Canon 10-22, we can't use it on the 5D. The 16-35L is out of our budget, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Only way to get "ultra wide angle" that would work on both bodies is the Sigma 12-24mm. It's W--------I---------D-----------E on the 5D and just W---I---D---E on the 30D.

If it was me (and hey, it is me!), I'd get the Sigma 10-20mm. A bit cheaper than the Canon 10-22mm and every bit as good (ducks/puts on flame suit  )

I'll take a look into the sigma 10-20, thanks.

17-40L is my choice on my 40D. The distortion is minimal at 17mm and is non-existent past 24mm.

With a 10-2x, you're going to get very distorted pictures at the wide end. Just keep that in mind.

I would suggest going with the 17-40L and keeping it on your 30D then switching it to the 5D when you want really wide.

I doubt that the Canon 10-22 would be fast enough for wedding shots indoor unless you had good lighting. Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 would be great on the 30 indoors

That picture right there is exactly what I'm talking about. Look at the lighting in that room. You have the heavy duty fixtures pumping out additional light over the decorative lighting. That's a situation of "good" lighting. My photographers almost killed me because the reception hall was mainly lit by candles :)

There aren't many times I need my 10-22 at weddings, but it has always been fast enough for me when I needed it. You can shoot slower with it without getting noticeable motion blur because the people are smaller in the frame. The Canon 10-22 is faster than the Sigma, and has a larger range.

For the OP either the 12-24 to work with both, or the 17-40 (if you want real wide shots put it on the 5D).

Have you considered the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8?
It's "faster" than the other UWAs out there, perfect for wide angle indoor shooting...

I have used, not at weddings mind you, and have been told by many a photographer, that the Tokina 11-16 is hard to beat...if you can get it.

The bad thing about that lens is that if something happens to the 40D, then you are out a wide angle lens. If you have a 17-40 and something happens to the 5D, then you are out a wide angle too, but you still have a backup for a normal lens on the 40D if something happens to the 24-70.

Well we actually have a Rebel XT, it was our first DSLR, so its actually a backup for a back up. :)

I bought the SIGMA 12 24mm also because I have the 5D and 30D combination and wanted wide for both cameras and I didn't care about the f4.5-5.6 speed because my other lenses are f2.8 and less.:lol::lol:
