I am considering buying a telephoto lens for use with 5D. I hope to do some lunar shots as well as wildlife.
The Canon 100-400 range can be extended with converters, whereas I gather the Sigma 150-500 can't (correct me if I'm wrong).
The Sigma is heavier, but costs significantly less.
So I would be interested in feedback from owners of either, especially the Sigma which is a fairly recent release.
My question is basically about IQ - is the Sigma in any way comparable with the Canon 100-400?

Canon 24-105 L IS USM,
Canon 400mm L f5.6
Canon 7D, Canon 1.4 TCII
Canon 10-22, Canon 420EX speedlite,

Olympus OMD EM5, 20-40 f2.8 PRO

I have used the 100-400 L and own the 150-500. I think that the IQ is slightly better on the 100-400, but everything else is a toss up or won by the Sigma. The Sigma has better bokeh, a better OS system, more reach, and is much cheaper (when comparing new prices). AF is equal IMO.

As to TCs neither lens will AF on a 5D with a reporting TC. You need to either use a non-reporting TC or tape the pins. You will need good light for either lens when using a TC

Thanks a lot for your reply. I have never used a TC, so perhaps you could comment further. I take it from what you say that I can in fact extend the Sigma 150-500 reach with a TC - I can get over the non AF - but what make/model of TC is suitable?

I use the Tamron 1.4x TC on mine. I have read that the Canon version will not fit.

Here are a couple of shots from that combo on my MKII.

Those are impressive images - I am leaning towards the Sigma - will make final decision over next few days. Thanks again for feedback.
