Is it possible for canon to update the 1D Mark III firmware to let the zoom in preview use the original file versus the thumbnail to view sharpness? Or is that not a likely possibility? I can see the problem with not being able to see if the image is in focus correctly or not. I might be dreaming. What are your thoughts?

Possible? Probably. Likely? Probably not.

I use FastStone to view pics on my computer. It has the option you'd like to see in the Mk III - it can either view the embedded jpeg or the fullsize RAW image. Obviously the resolution of the RAW is much higher.

But it takes much, much longer to view the RAW image. I'd expect the same situation in-camera.

Is the preview really that bad? I am about to pull the trigger and buy one. I have the Rebel XT, and while the screen is microscopic in size, zoomed in, I can see exactly how sharp the image is.

I don't see why they can't do it. My rebel does it. At least whatever my rebel does shows the sharpness of the image well.

No, rebel doesn't and in fact has a smaller preview file.

OP, you are just wrong, you don't zoom in on a thumbnail, you zoom in on a preview. Previews vary by camera, but are between 800 and 2000 on the wide side. Thumbnails are somewhere around 200, but are not used for zooming. You meant to say preview, not thumbnail.

As for feasibility, yes, very doable, but at the cost of a lot of processing power and memory. Say goodbye to fast scrolling between photos. I think canon would rather avoid complaints about speed rather than worry about 100% crops.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Adjusting the sharpness of whatever picture style you have set will effect the sharpness of the preview in the LCD.

I really wish that an update like that was in the pipeline, however we'll probably never get it.

Zooming in to check the sharpness on the LCD is hopeless, on all the DSLRs I've had to be honest.
