I opted for the 70-200 f/2.8 IS along with the 2x extender as I've really developed an addiction for lenses that will work well under broader lighting conditions and only need the extender on rare occasions. So, for my needs, this combo was the right choice.

There is a definite drop in IQ with the 2x mounted with this lens but the results are still acceptable and better then cropping half my pixels away by going without it.

Below is a shot taken with the 2x extender mounted to my 70-200 f/2.8 of a gas station approx. 1/2 a mile away.

Cheers! :)

Given the choices you presented then I would go with the 100-400 all the way. I have no experience with that particular lens but I do have a 70-200 2.8IS. My 70-200 is one of the sharpest ones I have seen compared to the ones my friends own it really starts to suffer in both AF and IQ when you add extenders. I don't even like to use a 1.4x with it and wouldn't even want to think about a 2x.

i looked at the 100/400 and decided i would rather have the larger 2.8 apperture of the 70/200.

drawers full of slightly mouldy Leica kit, a couple of newish Japanese bits, nearly every cheap Chinese flash modifying toy ever sold on ebay and sooooo many batteries the TSA have me on a no fly list ;)
