I have seen a lot of threads out there discussing both whether the 1D is still a usable camera, and second, how slow of a shutter speed can you go in shooting volleyball. My son has pretty much taken over my Canon gear, but I decided because of all the discussion to see how well the old 1D would work when I went with him on one of his shoots. I have to tell you, I am happier than I thought I would be. This was shot at ISO 1000, 1/200 at f2.8 with a very old Sigma 120-300 and a 1D Classic shot JPG. While the new stuff is far better, push come to shove I guess the old 1D can still produce if needed. I feel a little bad because this camera used to be one of my constant companions but hadn't been powered it up in over a year since I made the change to .... never mind on that one. Oh well, here is a sample shot.

use iso 1600 and crank up the shutter.
its sports, you obviously dont want a slower shutter because youll get motion blur. theres only a minor case of it on your picture.

and just use noise ninja for noise reduction later.
and the 1d is a very capable camera ( check the sig )

for sports you want to get a shutter speed at the minimum 1/500th.

Thanks guys, yeah, I have been shooting volleyball now for 4 years. This was a just for fun test. My son was shooting my mk IIn I used to use and I shoot D3s now. I just wanted to see what the old camera can do. I was quit pleased with the ISO 1000 performance of the 1D. I still wouldn't go to 1600 on it though as I am not fond on the look of ninja'd images... it is just a personal preference thing. But I really do appreciate you all sharing your experiences and advice - you can always learn something.

Thanks for this, Mark! It's solid proof that skill behind the gear can produce excellent results with what most folks consider to be outdated gear. Well done!!
