Using the 2x teleconverter, are you happy with the results wide open or do you need to stop down to say f8 to get decent sharpness?

Sharpness is just ok wide open, but for best results I use f/8 if possible.
Even f/6.3 makes some noticeable difference..

Some 600mm f/5.6 shots:

 With some backgrounds with Tc2X I get sometimes also quite harsh bokeh (with trees ?) like on the first picture with the reindeer . So actually, I am rather careful with using TC2X

You do lose some IQ, but not extremely bad... I was on shutter priority mode, shooting the surfers (between 1/1000sec and 1/2000sec.)... I just let the aperture set its own setting, which usually ran between f/5.6 and f/11 (depending on the shutter speed)... Here's another one with my Kenko 2x TCon...

This one is at f/7.1 @ 1/1600sec... Not too shabby...

I still dont know which one to get, I will probably end up with both in the long run hehe.A sharp 420mm at f4 would be awesome but then 600mm at f5.6 is tempting as well for wildlife and sports like surfing.

^ It really depends... For wildlife where the animals really don't move and/or move towards you, the 2x is great for the added reach... For fast moving events (i.e. surfing), when they get too close, you lose the framing and start chopping off their surf boards, hands, and/or head...

:D

Exactly.I will buy one first and some time later get the other.Having the ability to have 300mm,420mm and 600mm with one lens will be great

^ If I'm not mistaken, Roy, I did the same thing... Started with the 1.4x and loved the extra reach with minimal IQ loss... Then purchased a 2x at a great price... There was a slight hit on IQ, but for the most part, very acceptable results...

:D

Yes, 2x TC can sometimes produce weird bokeh.
Ok, more to come :D

Both Kenko and Canon extenders behave like that?
