the whole thing looks OOF to me. it looks like you were using AF on the kit lens in low light... the kit lens is very effective, i use it all the time, but in low light like this you really need to manually focus it. also, just a wild guess, but the exposure for this was probably somewere near 1/5th a second, and sometimes when shooting trains with that slow of speed it's fun to find a moving train... it gives it a very nice sense of motion without becoming to abstract.
it's a good start, keep it up!

I don't think anyone would intentionally shoot a 1/2" exposure hand held, but if he did, that would account for the OOF look.
