I have one of these on my 300 f 2.8. It works pretty well for protecting the lens however the construction is a little sloppy and the price is riciculous.

Yes.

It isn't so much to protect it as to make it less obvious to both wildlife and curious humans.

No I don't. And I take the plastic off my lampshades too.

Hi,

I've had LensCoats on my 300/2.8 and 500/4 since new, about 7 years ago. They work great for a number of reasons.

1. Camo... of course. Less obvious to critters and people.

2. The little bit of padding helps provide some lens protection from bumps and bruises.

3. Ditto for photographer protection... From cold and the metal lens barrel, from bumps and bruises when carrying the lens on a strap, etc.

The only problem I've run into with them, a couple times I've had horses think they looked like a tasty snack and try to eat them! Seriously, it's happened at least twice that I can recall. Lost a camo cap that way once, too.

Over time the little plastic windows over the lens' switch controls have yellowed a bit. And, some of the smaller pieces such as at the drop-in filter have come loose and needed to be re-glued. Other than that, they've worked just great... I'd get them again and recommend them.

When I got it, they didn't offer one for my 70-200... I might get one. A friend has them on practically everything... 100 macro, 100-400 and some other lenses.

If you don't need the padding, for use on something like tripod legs or a lens hood or even a smaller lens, extension tube or teleconverter that LensCoat doesn't make anything to fit, hunting stores have cloth camo tape that works pretty darned well too.

Can the coats be removed easily without leaving sticky glue?

Can the same coats then be reapplied back on?

I thought these would be great since wildlife is my main interest, but as soon as I saw the price one of the long sleeve camo t-shirts I use for turkey hunting lost one of it's sleeves. Just slip it on and secure with a couple rubber bands. Granted a shirt sleeve may not offer the same level of protection or fit, but I bet it isn't much less protection and when I want to not be seen I don't care about looks.

I use a couple of sets of these for my Sigmonster and 500 f4..... works well in protecting the finish from handling wear, though the adhesive in the stick-on pieces easily turned to sticky mush in our tropical environment.
