Fun poses. The first shot is better from a colour point of view, the second is washed out. Also in the second shot his eyes are shaded by the hat - careful use of flash can 'fill-in' the shadows for a pleasant effect. Lastly I'd put more distance between subject and background - blurring the background makes the subject stand out.

The first one has some potential. I played with it a bit in photoshop. I did not post it because you don't have image editing turned on. With your permission I will post up my version and tell you what I did to improve it.

In PS I increased saturation and contrast. It was a little overexposed so I adjusted levels. Selected just the background and added a little gaussian blur. You have to be careful to not overdo the gaussian blur or it will look fake.
